Eclipsing

Eclipsing

Separately, Athens, Ga.–based partners Dan Donahue and Page Campbell have worked with such notable eccentrics as Of Montreal, Elf Power, Hope for Agoldensummer, and Dark Meat. Together, they concoct soundscapes of small-scale grandeur built on delicate guitar filigree, rumbling percussion, and overarching choral vocals. Campbell’s voice invites comparisons to Cowboy Junkies’ Margo Timmins, particularly on the plaintive country ballad “No Trouble.” “Be Beautiful” finds her wrapping herself in eerie medieval colors, while “Fever of My Dreams” has the morose charm of vintage British folk-rock. Eclipsing’s production, courtesy of Suny Lyons, drapes each track in skeins of sound that enhance rather than obscure the tunes. The northern lights shimmer of “Sea to Sky” finds balance in the hypnotic march tempo of “Wildfires” and the dreamily floating textures of “Wayless.” Guest appearances by Neutral Milk Hotel’s Scott Spillane on trumpet and Olivia Tremor Control’s John Fernandes on violin enrich the atmosphere.
