Hello, Voyager

The California-based singer/songwriter Carla Bozulich has been in a number of stylistically varied bands, including Ethyl Meatplow, the Geraldine Fibbers, Scarnella, and her latest group, Evangelista. Bozulich’s intense vocals, which evoke Patti Smith and Diamanda Galas, light up the experimental rock of Hello, Voyager, and her dark, romantic lyrics give the album a sharp edge. On “Winds of Saint Anne,” a droning harmonium hovers as Bozulich intones lines like, “Here’s to the good days of a summer out west / Here’s to Saint Anne who’s gone mad.” The bluesy “Lucky Lucky Luck” tells a tale of growing up wild before abruptly wrapping up with the line, “If I touch you, you’ll be lucky too.” Strings figure prominently on two cuts: “For the L’il Dudes,” an affecting instrumental for string quintet, and “The Blue Room,” where the lovely vocal melody is abetted by a gorgeous arrangement. “Smooth Jazz,” with its artful noise and loose martial groove, is fortunately anything but smooth; and the title track morphs from Albert Ayler-like folk improv to impassioned spoken-word rant. It’s a strong ending to a strong album.
