Minutes, Miles, Troubles and Trials

A Kickstarter campaign funded the four days in the studio that it took for Sioux City Kid to complete its debut album, the 35-minute blues-rock howler Minutes, Miles, Troubles and Trials. Centered around the songs and whiskey-soaked vocals of Jared Griffin, the album emulates blues-rock from the vantage point of a Tom Waits fan (more than, say, an Eric Clapton and/or Cream fan). “Heartbreak Shakedown” starts with the ragged rhythm of Bob Dylan’s “Tombstone Blues,” complete with a nasty, stinging electric guitar and lyrics that sound like someone was taking LSD to see the future. “American Honey” veers closer to the rock edge with distorted guitars, supersized beats, and a massive accompanying vocal chorus. The acoustic-based “Lookout Tacoma” provides the album's soul-searching moment, with a harmonica lurking just behind the organ. “Killin’ Time Blues” and ”Low Down and Busted” are more interested in playing hard than thinking too much, which is usually how the best blues-rock is made.
