8wm / Novakane

Back in the early ‘90s, Black Sheep were on top of the world, catching burn on radio, MTV, and countless dancefloors with insta-classic smash singles like "The Choice Is Yours," "Strobelite Honey," and "Flavor of the Month." Then their second album dropped, and even though it was still pretty decent, the fickle rap audience had moved on. Fast forward 15 years or so, and, like many of their peers, Black Sheep have re-emerged, doing occasional concerts and putting out new music through obscure indie labels. Black Sheep 2.0 is really just Dres, whereas Mista Lawnge, who produced much of their legendary debut, is doing his own thing solo (look for his 2006 CD The Class of 89 released as Mr. Long). Despite the cryptic album title, 8wm/Novakane is definitely worth a listen, as Dres still flips the cocky/slick verbals, set to jazz-heavy beats provided by Vitamin D and Showbiz. "Wonder," "Shorty," and "Be Careful" are standouts.
