Rave On Buddy Holly (Bonus Track Version)

This tribute to Buddy Holly is one that tries to recast the Lubbock, Texas legend’s tunes in a variety of styles. Paul McCartney turns “It’s So Easy” into a menacing stomper, putting to rest any suspicions that he was never a real rocker. Florence + The Machine add percussion to “Not Fade Away” and remove the Bo Diddley groove in the process. Cee Lo Green blings out the electronics on “(You’re So Square) Baby, I Don’t Care.” Justin Townes Earle retains the spirit of “Maybe Baby” but throws together some fierce guitarwork. Nick Lowe plays it straight for “Changing All Those Changes,” replicating Holly’s original recording. Lou Reed’s take on “Peggy Sue” is the sound of a cement mixer grinding the tune to a nub. John Doe’s version of “Peggy Sue Got Married” slows the song to an eerie crawl across the desert. The Detroit Cobras bring “Heartbeat” alive. My Morning Jacket orchestrate “True Love Ways” as you might expect Holly to do so in 2011. She & Him do a fine job turning “Oh Boy!” into a Phil Spector girl-group number. Wild and adventurous takes on a legend!
