Roll Me, Tumble Me

Roll Me, Tumble Me

Boston's Deadly Gentlemen continue to carefully feature modern ideas and energy inside a string-band/bluegrass format without radicalizing the form to the point where it's unrecognizable. The Gentlemen's third album, Roll Me, Tumble Me, is their debut for the higher-profile Rounder Records. They've brought back three favorites from their previous albums—the title track, "It'll End Too Soon," "Working"—and recast them here in new roles. Banjoist/songwriter Greg Liszt (also a Ph.D in molecular biology), who'd served as part of Bruce Springsteen's backup band for the Seeger Sessions tour, writes with an emotive ear for what makes a heart-tugging tune. Whether it's the upbeat and playful "I Fall Back" or the wistful "Beautiful's Her Body," the songs capture true pathos. The rest of the band members are prodigies and musical overachievers who've played with the best, and a natural chemistry can be heard embarrassing the competition with the awesome string-play of "All the Broken Pieces."
