This is exceptional. World of Should's got one leg in the Midwest -- to my sensibilities -- and one in New York, where I think Janice and Mark are based. MAybe I'm biased but for me, Midwest means Chicago, which in this EP brings me echoes of Liz Phair's Exile in Guyville and Wilco's A Ghost Is Born -- Check-out Pretty Little House for a tighter take on "Spiders (Kidsmoke)" than Tweedy and the boys did in their extended studio take on a similar rhythm. In addition to the drive, there's some good edge in here, too, and from New York I'm feeling a sympathetic lineage that seems to be informed by old Feelies, Velvets and Television's breakthrough Marquee Moon.
All these references are NOT to say I'm hearing something that's anything but original.
From here, I don't feel the need to go into further self-serving soapboxing on specific joys of each song. Let the music, not my windbaggery, kill you. World of Should deserves serious attention by lovers of rock and the critics who try to turn us all onto the good stuff. KCRW, Current, NPR, and Jim & Greg from SoundOpinions.org really ought to be pimping this fine groovage.
