After his group Theodore called it quits, St. Louis songwriter/singer/guitarist Justin Kinkel-Schuster relocated to Mississippi to work with drummer/multi-instrumentalist Andrew Bryant. Their debut album, Phantom Limb, sent them on an endless tour. Much of Wyoming feels influenced by the stint, where bizarre nights in crappy bars were the norm. If Bruce Springsteen can have Nebraska, then Water Liars can use Wyoming as a desperate end of a dream, as the title track beautifully plays out. "Fake Heat" screams in agony about a pained sexual relationship. "Linens" cruises with a country-rock lope as the harmonies reflect the ache of replaying sad and monotonous scenes and a vibrato-heavy organ adds a static touch. "How Will I Call You" features gorgeous acoustic fingerpicking. "You Work Days I Work Night" turns in a sublime, heartbreaking last dance worthy of Paul Westerberg.
