A prolific producer and key player in the West Coast hip-hop scene, Long Beach native Soopafly got his start working with Snoop and Dre on joints like Murder Was the Case and "Natural Born Killaz." He also worked extensively on Tha Dogg Pound's debut album and produced tracks for just about every Cali rapper you can think of; he was also part of the short-lived group Westurn Union (later known as Dubb Union). He remains one of the Golden State's busiest and most reliable beatmakers, but his rapping career never really jumped off. Released in 2001, Dat Woopty Woop was his first solo album, featuring cameos from all the usual suspects (Snoop, Daz, Kurupt, Xzibit, Crooked I, The Outlawz, Trey D, etc.). Streetcentric rhymes and lowrider-ready tracks dominate, though by the time this came out, many rap fans had moved on from the classic G sound. Regardless, it's a rock-solid effort from an underrated artist. "There Will Never Be Anotha," "Pimp City," and "Freak Freak" are standouts.
