My Coming Day

My Coming Day

Julian Drive lays its musical road out straight, with few detours into strange territory. On its debut album My Coming Day, this Georgia-based group drives home its unambiguously Christ-centered message with a mélange of modern pop sounds. Though the band likes to unleash a brawny rock guitar riff at times, its melodic songwriting is more akin to Nashville-style country (think Rascal Flatts) than anything else. The mostly upbeat tenor of the album’s tunes fits singer Shane Bowers’ effusive vocal style nicely. He pours out his faith and gratitude in “From Your Hands,” “Always There,” “You Can,” and similarly galvanizing numbers. Julian Drive’s buoyant sense of reverence does allow for moments of self-doubt (especially in “Cry” and “One Step Away”), though the band is less convincing at capturing pain than joy. “Unplug” (a playful account of media overload) and “The Reason” (a keyboard-dominated track with Beatles overtones) are among the more distinctive cuts here. If you like covering familiar terrain, Julian Drive delivers.
