With the second Wheeler Brothers studio album, the Austin sibling trio hones twangy folk-rock with the amazing three-part brother harmonies heard throughout their 2011 debut LP, Portraits. In the spirit of Mother Hips or The Stone Foxes, “My Time” opens with the earthy tones of alt-country, the innocence of jam rock, and the sunny melodies that only become more radiant with those three blood-kin voices intertwined. Patrick (vocals, percussion, and drums) and Tyler (vocals and bass) usually sing behind the lead of Nolan Wheeler (vocals, guitar, piano, glockenspiel, and harp), who has the most dynamic voice of the three. In the following “Straight and Steady,” he effortlessly segues between a restrained, gritty tenor and a throaty, soulful croon that breaks up in all the right spots whenever the song turns into a slightly funky strut. Aside from writing catchy, thoughtful songs, the brothers Wheeler have a knack for gussying up their tunes with rootsy instruments without sticking to the confines of any single genre. The title track swirls blues, country, and classic rock tones to create something fresh-sounding.
