I'll Have Some of That

The Babys had a string of hits in the ‘70s, and many band members who went on to further fame. John Waite has his solo career, while Jonathan Cain joined Journey, and Ricky Phillips plays bass for Styx. Original guitarist Wally Stocker and drummer Tony Brock decided to keep the group going and hired lead singer/bassist John Bisaha and guitarist Joey Sykes to fill out the ranks, adding a keyboardist and backup singers for live shows. The 2014 set I’ll Have Some of That retains much of The Babys’ original hard rock-pop flavor, but it also emphasizes their ‘70s influences more than one might expect. It works. The hard rocker “You Saved My Life” and the album’s first single, the power ballad “I See You There,” demonstrate the band’s versatility. “Every Side of You,” “Grass Is Greener," and “It’s a Gas” are accessible enough for stadium rockers and likely what fans were hoping for after memories of previous Babys hits like “Isn’t It Time,” “Every Time I Think of You," and “Head First.”
