The late singer/songwriter Keith Green was a troublemaker. He entered the Christian music world in the mid-‘70s full of born-again fire, eager to testify from the rooftops and reinvigorate the faith of others. Before his passing in 1982, he recorded a body of work still impressive for its musical intensity and prophetic passion. The Keith Green Collection gives a sampling of both Green’s gentle hymns and stinging sermons. Among the former are “You Put This Love In My Heart,” “Soften Your Heart” and the much-recorded “Your Love Broke Through,” joyful tunes extolling the Lord. Green’s boisterous singing style and emphatic piano playing on such tracks makes him sound like a Christian Cat Stevens. His angry songs directed at slothful believers are even more distinctive. “Asleep In the Light,” for instance, lets loose against the spiritually numb — by the end of the track, Green is nearly crying. He shows his humorous side on “The Sheep and the Goats,” a Biblical storytelling tune. An iconoclast who made “No Compromise” his motto, Keith Green’s music came from the heart and aimed for the spirit.
