This Is the Town: A Tribute to Nilsson, Vol. 1

Harry Nilsson’s eclectic pop sense, matched with his over-the-top humor and forceful personality, made an indelible impression on the listening public—but even more so with his fellow musicians, who loved to hang out with him and watch him work. His cynicism undercut the humor with a dark side that further attracted misfits. On this tribute, these indie rockers show an irreverent sense that Nilsson likely would’ve appreciated. His daughter Annie Nilsson did the cover art and offers up an electric piano interpretation of “Gotta Get Up” that’s true to her bloodline. Low Cut Connie rock out “Jump into the Fire” with a loose, spirited free-for-all that can’t be denied. Dawn Landes takes the classic “You’re Breakin’ My Heart” and plays it straight for deep effect. Martha’s Vineyard troubadour Willy Mason works through “Think About Your Troubles” with an honest poignancy. Tracy Bonham dares to tackle Fred Neil’s “Everybody’s Talkin’,” which Nilsson owned as the theme song to Midnight Cowboy. Brian Dewan courts the silliness of “Coconut.”
