Simple, free, good.

Without, paying you get a bare bones flash card app. It doesn't keep track of your yes' and no' and does not have a timer.

Awesome first step in learning Japanese.

I've been self studying Japanese for a while now and I've downloaded and used just about every Japanese learning app there is, but for learning kana this one was the best by far. It's easy to use, extensive with content and add free. If you are just starting to learn Japanese and you have zero knowledge about any of it, I've been there and it's daunting. My best tip is to first learn Hiragana and Katakana before diving into grammar and vocabulary, and this app is perfect for that first step in learning Japanese. Plus, once you've learned the kana this app also has 920 more vocabulary flash cards for you to practice your reading, and extend your knowledge, and they're all completely free which is very rare, you don't have to pay for a "deluxe version" or anything like that. So let me save you the time in looking for a better Japanese flash card app. This has by far been the best free Japanese app in all my days of searching.

I learned to read Japanese!

I used this app in 2015 to learn hiragana and katakana before a trip to Japan, and it was spectacular. I had the alphabets down in only a few weeks! Even if you don't know how to speak Japanese, learning to read Katakana can still help you greatly as most katakana words are English cognates. I still use this regularly to keep up my skills.
