better than the alternative
I got this app and the other crossword app ("crosswords") and prefer this one much more than the other. Downloading NY times puzzles is much easier (just put in user/pass combo) as opposed to figuring out the right info for "crosswords". Also this program has zoom, making selecting boxes much much easier. Moving around the puzzle is intuitive and in line with what you would expect on an ipod/phone. There's also a pencil mode and pen mode for those who enjoy that. Very good application, possibly even better than the old 1.1.4/3 application.
Solid at $5.99
Nice interface options, and responsive UI. Haven't tried it with NYtimes premium, but the login screen is built in and fairly simple. Plenty of free sources and good variety.
Crashed the first time I ran it, but I restarted my phone and now it's very stable. (This is common for a lot of iphone apps)
The one major area for improvement is the the download screen, which is not very intuitive. When selecting a date from a particular source, there's no check mark or other indicator that you've already downloaded it (or if there is, it's not readily apparent). The calendar selector is nice eye candy, but a sub-menu of available puzzles with a check mark if you've downloaded it, and a blue dot if it's newly added since the last refresh, would be much more useful. Also, an option to subscribe to a source, automatically downloading all the new puzzles since the last launch, would be a nice feature.
Finally, glad to see the price dropped from $10 to $6, placing the app squarely in impulse-buy territory (worked for me, certainly).
Great! Very intuitive. I've been waiting for a crossword app!
The app works great and its easy to download recent crosswords from popular sites. Took me a minute to figure out I need to double tap to bring up the keyboard, but the clues change depending on what square you tap in so you dont have to fumble to match the clue to the cursor. Very impressed. $5.99 is a great deal!
