Not what I expected at all
When I first saw this game and it's screenshots I was a little worried about the controls as the description described. I thought about it and I'm like, well it's a buck, I didn't buy a coffee today so what the heck? I downloaded this and started playing and was hooked! Very easy controls once you get used to them and shooting couldn't be easier, there is a virtual joystick and all you do is move you thumb in the direction that you want to shoot in. Movement is done with the tilt sensor and you can re-calibrate whenever you need to. This game plays like Super Statdust HD and Geometry Wars Retro Evolved, if you were fans of either, I highly recommend this title! This will be what they call, a cult classic :)
Love this game! Now 5 stars!!
Update: With the subsequent app updates, I've changed my review to 5 stars.
The more I play 2079 and compare to other arcade shooters, the more I realize the controls really should be emulated by other developers. It's one of a sparse few that allows for quick multidirectional shooting. Too often games have controls that limit shooting only to what's in the front of the ship, but 2079 does one better. The navigation is set up in a way that allows for quick shooting in any direction, and they're very easy to use. You simply move your finger, and with the various powerups...one of which is a blast function where you shake your device...the game should satisfy the casual as well as the serious gamer. For me, I'm more of puzzles player, but 2079 makes it easy for me to pick up and play. On top of that, the developer listens to the community as you can tell with each subsequent update. While I continue to look at other similar games that have come out the past few months, 2079 still remains on my list of favorites.
For anyone on the fence about 2079, you really should look deeper. It's a great game, and you get used to the controls quickly. Remember, while graphics are should be a consideration, you should look at gameplay and 2079 definitely has that.
I REALLY LOVE THIS GAME!!!
Of all the games I've downloaded/purchased and tried (probably over 200 by now), this is among the 3 games that I play the most. As a former serious gamer turned casual gamer, this game fits my interests very well. I've always waited for a game to appear that would make you run and shoot independently at the same time, perfectly utilizing the accelerometer, and 2079 does it so well. Before this game I had envisioned a tank/armored-core type of game that would use the control scheme, but 2079 was so much fun despite the simplicity of the gameplay. I'm sure soon more games will follow suit with the control scheme probably with even more complicated gameplay, but 2079 has definitely set the tone. I am appalled by the average review score this game is getting, seriously. And regarding crashes, originally my review stated that it never crashed but sad to say, it finally did on my device. And mind you I take care of my device and do hard resets once in a while (I've previously only had 2 or 3 crashes from apps out of over 250 apps I've tried already). Just in case it helps for the developers, it happened when my score was above 400k. It suddenly went to my home screen. One thing I noticed also is that when I resumed play after putting the device on stanby (pressing the off button), the sounds were gone. So I don't know if it had something to do with the crash. I hope it gets looked at and fixed right away. By the way the crash occurred on version 1.0.1. Anyway I still think this game isn't getting enough credit for its work. Great job for the developers. I see that a major update is coming with additional modes and enemies. That would be perfect. The only other glitch I've experienced with 2079 was when a low battery warning occurs in the middle of the game, the game immediately switches to the calibration screen and stays there forever. So I hope it gets fixed soon. I guess the only other suggestions I could think of is to add kickass techno music and some interesting boss fights that appear at certain levels of scores (since there aren't any "levels/stages") . Thank you!
