Functions, but it
I've used Remote Buddy for a few years now and i've always enjoyed it and found it to be a pretty well-designed application. The developer is fairly responsive and seems to have put a lot of work into it. Unfortunately, i can't say that i'm as impressed with the AJAX Remote aspect.
To put it briefly, i would say that this functions... but that's it. It does the absolute bare minimum, and it's irritating to use while it's doing it.
Speaking more specifically:
❌ I find the app to be very ugly aesthetically — everything's blurry on Retina screens, the main-screen buttons look very dated and amateur-ish, all of the interface components look 'fake', &c. It just looks really un-Mac-like and un-iOS-like.
❌ The structure, organisation, and 'flow' of the app is not very good; it seems sort of hastily designed. In several cases, interface buttons appear (or don't appear) in very unintuitive spots; for example, in one place there is what is essentially a 'back' button, but it appear on the right instead of the left. Having a tab interface at the bottom of the screen (similar to the App Store and Music apps) would probably be better than the big-icons-on-a-launch-pad thing they have going, and the 'menu' (the one with all of the applications and system control functions) could be better organised. The latter feature desperately needs some strategically placed dividers, sub-menus, and explanations (like in the iPhone's Settings app).
❌ Responsiveness is very poor. Everything is unnecessarily slow to respond (in comparison to similar apps like Transmission's Web interface and Apple's own Remote). Button presses sometimes don't register, or more commonly they register when you don't expect them to (like when you're trying to scroll through a list).
❌ The 'Remote' aspect, which is perhaps the most important feature of the app, offers absolutely no advantage over using the basic Apple hardware remote. It has no extra buttons, it's less attractive, and there isn't even any feedback to let you know that a button was pressed.
❌ Since it's just a relatively basic Web app, there're no options of any kind (except for storing your log-in information).
Overall i find it sort of disappointing. I am not sure what the demand is for an app like this, so maybe it's not economical, but i personally would be willing to pay 2 or 3 dollars if it meant having something a bit more usable and attractive (and, ideally, native), like something similar to Apple's Remote app.
Works like a charm
Been waiting for it. Wished it was a bit better like plex perhaps but good enough... Better than safari...
A lifesaver!
It works great! We use it everyday at home since we lost the remote to our mac mini and now I would be lost without it. I was surprised it didn't have many reviews but I downloaded it anyway and it was well worth it...
