Sets the bar very, very high
This is by far my favorite iOS game - and I don't say that lightly. The game is fun, addicting, relatively simple to learn, and the multiplayer (pass n play, wifi, AND internet) works flawlessly. The fact that I've been playing this regularly for more than a year without getting tired of it is a testament to just how good it is.
This is the benchmark against which all other iOS board and card games should be measured. The attention to detail, the quality, the naturalness of the controls... I can count the games that come close to this level of love and care on one hand.
Also, the latest update makes the game look mind-blowingly gorgeous on the new iPad. I always loved the art style, but the crispness and fidelity at retina resolution is outstanding!
The lightning fast card game, now with more great updates!
UPDATE: Now THIS, is how you do an update! You guys really tackled some of our requests. Extending the honor point limit for longer matches offline is a nice plus. hi def for the 3rd gen iPad also an awesome plus. Online is also better with faster options to jump between menus and even achievements! Also, good call on streamlining re-acquiring IAPs properly. You devs rock!
At first glance, casual card game players will likely find Ascension to be way over their heads. With terms such as honor, runes, power, constructs, and so on the game is seemingly daunting at first and the tutorial might scare some for a brief moment. I guaranteee you if you stick with it 10 minutes and go into one offline match after the tutorial, you'll see that you understand everything quickly.
Ascension plays out like a resource battle where players play over one deck of cards each with their own unique hand from the same deck as well as a pool of 2 consistent cards that can be bought via runes (resources functioning like a currency) and 1 that can be recycled frequently (using power, attack points in-game) to keep a flow of points (honor) coming in every turn. Ascension is all about this mad dash for resources and careful planning to exact the most out of what you bring in every turn.
The game is playable offline against AI (you can fight 1-3 AIs) or online with friends (also leading up to 4 player matches). The game can be played real-time online or over the course of days (asynchronous) for those who are busy and want to preserve their match for later. Both online and offline allow you to set up multiple matches that can be saved, meaning you can juggle between games with various opponents or play an asynchronous style match with one friend, wait for their move, and hop into another match with somebody and play real-time.
Assuming that they fixed any issues with reclaiming IAPs I am highly considering the expansion for this game, and I NEVER do IAPs.
Pros:
- Matches can go lightning fast
- Both players play on a single deck, no need to earn points to or spend real cash to buy cards
- Multiple matches can be set up and postponed
- Real-time and asynchronous online play
- Universal app
Cons:
- Needs an update for 3rd gen iPads
- On iPhone you'll need to do a lot of zooming in
My favorite iPad game.
There are a lot of games on my iPad, most of them played a time or two, they come and go very quickly. This one has stuck around forever, and I find myself playing it all the time still. The one wish I had was for a larger honor pool, and here it is with this update. Thanks!
I am not a Magic player, and I don't normally get into games like this, but I gave this one a shot, and can't quit.
