Crappy
This app has very good classic games, but when I want to play combat, it makes me play as both tanks. And it never lets me play against the computer. Also, when I play pong sports, I control both paddles, and I can never play by myself, because this stupid app makes you play a two player game with one control. Fix this horrible glitch and I will give this app five stars!
A good mobile version of these classics
There is no way this app deserves over 7500 one-star reviews. It works very well on the iPad. However, I don't think you can really play these kinds of games on an iPhone. If you plan to use this on an iPhone exclusively, this app is of novelty value only. These games were designed for physical controls and to get the most out of them you need the Atari dock or the iCade.
Of course, I grew up with these games and still love them. They were never designed for the phone or a tablet; playing them on one means making compromises.
Still, on the iPad this app is a lot of fun, and in the Atari dock and the iCade this app is tremendous.
As far as software is concerned, these are perfect ports of both many classic arcade games and Atari 2600 games. These ports are much better than the stuttery, slowed-down ports on the Midway arcade app (what's up with Defender--are the aliens on valium? and the sounds stink on Joust--utterly unlike the original arcade.). These Atari games are exactly like the arcade versions and the roms available for iMame. And some games work Better on an iPad. Playing Tempest on a touchscreen works really really well--you don't even need the virtual slider. Just drag your little crawler around the tube--brilliant. Tempest is one game that plays superbly on the iPad's glass screen. For that alone I would buy this app.
If you pair this app up with the Atari Arcade iPad dock or the iCade, it's just like playing the old 2600. Haunted House is still scary! Any 2600 game that used the joystick plays perfectly; paddle games, not so much… The same goes for arcade games; if they used a joystick or buttons that can be mapped onto a joystick, these ports play really well. Battlezone--great. Asteroids--great. Night Driver--not so good with a joystick...
For any iPad owner who grew up with these Atari games, this is a no-brainer: get it.
Of course it could be better. If it supported landscape mode (like iMame does) in the iCade without showing the virtual controls and/or if the Atari dock had a paddle wheel on it And a knob for playing Tempest and/or if I could play Activision 2600 games with it--then I would give it five stars.
Complete F-ing waste of time.
I wouldn't give this app any stars, but it didn't give me that option. What's the point in a free games app if you only get one free crappy game?
