Description
This program is a collection of awesome images of the 'heavenly color show.' Behold the grandeur, color, sparkle, mystery, and beauty of nature!
The auroras, sometimes called the southern or polar colors, are natural spectral and prismatic displays of color in the sky. They are usually observed at night, particularly in the polar regions. They typically occur in the ionosphere.
In upper latitudes, the Aurora Borealis is named after the Roman goddess of dawn, Aurora, and the Greek name for the wind. The auroras become more visible as you travel towards the axis and you near the polar magnetic center (which lies in Canada). From a distance, they could be mistaken for a sunrise or sunset.
Benjamin Franklin first brought attention to the mystery of these spectral shows. He theorized that the shifting colors were caused by a concentration of electrical charges in the polar regions that were made visible by snow and other moisture.
In the southern hemisphere, they may be called the southern polar radiance.
