Gameloft Gets It Right
The iDevice has finally found a great action-packed arcade fighting game in Blades of Fury. With a couple of terrific control options, mesmerizing graphics, and exciting gameplay, it’s never been easier or more aesthetically pleasing to put a beat down on an opponent.
Blades of Fury offers 4 different modes of play: Story, Arcade, Survival, and Practice. Story follows a bit of a weak plot, but gives you the opportunity to do battle and unlock new characters. There are 10 vastly different characters available in the game, but you’ll have only 6 at your disposal from the get-go. Training mode allows you to run through the outstanding tutorial, which has you practice each and every available more, offensive and defensive. You must satisfactorily complete each to move on to the next and eventually complete the tutorial. There is also a practice option which lets you beat on a non-fighting character to perfect your moves. It’s a nice training ground, especially if you tend to get beaten down early in the game.
Arcade and Survival are my personal favorites. Arcade allows you to earn points based on your performance in battle. Opponents get progressively more difficult as you move through the ranks. Survival mode keeps pitting you against enemy after enemy until you finally lose. Your health and magic will deplete over time, so keep an eye on your meters. Each mode brings something a little different and allows for great variety. In addition to the many characters, there are also 10 battlegrounds to choose from, including Babylon, Forest, Cemetery, and Inner Sanctum. Each looks stunning and is fun to play within its bounds.
There are also a bunch of options that allow you to customize gameplay, such as battle count, battle time, difficulty, attack and directional controls, and more. There is single player mode, as well as multiplayer available over local wi-fi or Bluetooth. The game also keeps track of many statistics and rankings, if that interests you.
As stated, the 3D graphics are gorgeous and help create an immersive visual experience. The sounds are crisp and exciting, with great sword effects and bone-crunching sounds that almost make you feel the crushing hits that are being doled out. You do have access to your own music library, so you can jam out to your own tunes if you’d rather. Controls are outstanding, showing great fluidity and intuitiveness. You can choose between d-pad or joystick, both of which work well. Attacks can be carried out through icons or swipe controls, which are very cool to use. Clearly, it’s the most important aspect in a game like this and Gameloft got it right.
Battles are a pure blast, though the taunting at the beginning of each match gets annoying, as each character uses the same phrase each time. I played through 28 straight levels in Survival and got really tired of “knowing Skurd’s name.” There are a ton of different moves available, all of which are outlined in an attacks list accessible from the pause menu. Most are pretty simple to pull off, so you should have a lot of fun with the variety. The opponent AI isn’t too bad. I seemed to win fairly easily on Normal mode, but Hard started cranking up the pressure and Very Hard was just that. Haven’t tried Hardest yet, as I’m afraid it might crush my ego pretty quickly.
In all, this is quite a solid game with a good deal of replay value. There are trophies to unlock by achieving certain goals, such as winning 10 or 20 straight matches in survival. Hopefully, Gameloft will come through and add online multiplayer in the future, which could really make this game something else. As it stands, I highly recommend the game for anyone with any interest in this genre. Honestly, this is my first game in the arcade fighter field and I’m having an absolute blast with it.
