Caffeine
By Lighthead Software
Open Mac App Store to buy and download apps.
Description
Caffeine is a tiny program that puts an icon in the right side of your menu bar. Click it to prevent your Mac from automatically going to sleep, dimming the screen or starting screen savers. Click it again to go back. Right-click (or ⌘-click) the icon to show the menu.
Important: Caffeine lives in the MENU BAR, and this is where its state is indicated. App Store puts the Caffeine icon in the dock, but you can just remove it if you want to.

Works Perfectly - and most reviews sole complaint is invalid
I just felt the need to write a review to correct the many people saying that there is no way to tell if Caffeine is running or not.
First off, you don't need the icon in your dock - and it is the dock icon that doesn't change to reflect if the program is running or not. BUT, the purpose of this program is to put the little cup of coffee icon up in your menu bar, just to the left of wifi and bluetooth icons. It works perfectly, and is greyed out while off, and full of black steaming coffee when it's on. I don't see why so many people have failed to notice this.
Anyway - does exactly what it is supposed to, as simply and unobtrusively as one could ask for. Great app for those who watch lots of video on their mac notebooks and don't want to mess with their energy saver settings. 5 star product.
Nice, but could be better.
Ever since InsomniaX stopped being updated, I have been looking for an app to prevent my Mac from sleeping. This app does that, but only if your machine is open. Sometimes I like to have my laptop closed yet awake to listen to music or while uploading large files. If this feature were added, the app would absolutely have a 5 star rating from me. Without it, however, 3 stars is adequate.
Works fine, but doesn't do what I want.
I was so happy to see a sleep disabling app with a time preference, but I want it to disable sleep when I close my laptop.
At every office you'll notice people walking to and from meetings carrying their laptops in the open position, because if they close them, they'll lose VPN access, or they'll have to reinitialize their wireless connections, etc. Very awkward, carrying a laptop like that. If Caffeine prevented sleep when closed, the 5 minute limit would be perfect.
I realize there is an overheating danger running with the screen closed, so maybe make that an option only on the 5 minute setting?
