Description
Squares or Lines – which are you?
It’s an important question because Check-4 is TWO games in one, and BOTH are super addicting!
One of the few multi-player iPhone games, Check-4 is designed for up to 4 players that can be mixed and matched between humans and computers!
Squares:
Form squares on the board by marking four corners with your piece (i.e. an X in each corner.) When a square is formed, you get as many points as a single side of the square (i.e. a 3 by 3 square = 3 points). So, the bigger the square the more points you get!
Lines:
Form a horizontal, vertical or diagonal line with at least four of your pieces (i.e. four X’s in a row). When a line of four pieces is formed you get 4 points. For every additional piece added to that same line, you get another 4 points. So, the longer the line you make the more points you get!
Features:
• 0 - 4 Players (You can watch the computer play itself if you like)
• Timed or Untimed Version for Single Player
• Variable playfield size
• Easy, Medium and Hard Computer Settings
• Switchable Sound effects
Check-4, the iPhone game that only took 28 years to make!

Great strategy game!
I was initially attracted to Check-4 because of the publisher's back story, which was eerily similar to my own. I invented a backgammon-like board game about 10 years ago, but have never done anything with it. Check-4 is similar to a game I used to play on the Palm that used squares, but also diamonds. That one was impossible to beat; this one is not. This game is much better because of the two gameplay options (square and line), although diamonds would be a nice third option. The interface is attractive, and the option to choose the number of players (both human and AI) is great.
Easy to play , difficult to master
I picked this game up prior to a long road trip. I am a fan of puzzle games and am always on the look out for a fresh approach. I took a gamble on this game and have since spent hours playing. This game has all of the hallmarks of a well designed puzzle game, wrapped up in a frenetic competition. This is a the thinking mans connect four. My kids are 11 and 7 and had a great time playing the game on the lowest AI levels. I spent hours cursing as I tried to beat the AI on the higher levels. The developers did a good job at balancing the AI across the difficulty levels, making this game suitable to young and old alike. In addition to AI competition, the game allows multiple human players in the same game, a nice feature. Perhaps we will see some sort of multiplayer? Bottom line, great game and well worth the price.
This game is fun and challenging for multiple ages!
What's great about this game is that it's fun, colorful and easy to understand. Even kids can play it. I was at a friends house with some other guests and the two 7 year-old boys were playing the thing for an hour (great way to quite them down). They seemed to like the "tic-tac-toe" nature of the game and the colorful shapes. Not sure what another reviewer meant about the AI being too easy. He must have had it set on easy mode the whole time (which is perfect for kids starting out). But when I put the difficulty on "Hard", it's very challenging. In fact, if you play three computer players, they gang up on you - I haven't been able to win so far! Another cool thing is that if you set all the players to "Human" you can place the shapes to form cool patterns made of the colorful pieces. The developers could even expand on this to add another mode of play "Paint with Shapes" or something like that.
