Fantastic and unique twist on Arkanoid
"Chimps Ahoy!" is a high quality and professional looking game that is blast to play. You play the game with both hands, one on each side of the screen, controlling two paddles. It's a great twist on the Arkanoid genre that takes advantage of multi-touch and not only works really well, but gives the game new life. It also largely resolves the problem that breakout type games usually have - as you get fewer bricks on the screen, the game gets less fun as you try to get the last few. Instead, here as you get fewer bricks, you now have to play with both hands even more, which keeps the game fun. Multiball play is especially entertaining with this setup. In addition there are fun twists like the boats that shoot cannonballs at you - if one of your paddles gets hit it becomes momentarily stunned. Also, blocks aren't universally layed out perpindicular to your paddles - many are angled, which makes for more intersting rebounds. There is the usual assortment of power-up blocks, though instead of having one that makes your paddle(s) larger, there is one that makes the ball (supposedly a coconut, though to me it looks like a bowling ball) into a larger beach ball. There's medals that you get awarded for achieving certain goals, although since the game doesn't tell you what these goals are ahead of time, they just seem random. It ought to work like Motion X Poker, where you can see what the goal is and then try to achieve it. More fun are the hats and clothing you can win by getting all the coins in bonus rounds, to dress up the monkey at the title screens. Silly, but fun. The graphics and animation (which the screenshots don't do justice), as well as the sounds and music are whimsically fun. Like many iPhone games, this one lets you quit the game at any time and resume right where you left off the next time. Also there are two save slots, so the game can be shared. I have run into a couple annoying, but minor bugs. While, gladly, the game has volume controls (in the pause screen) and lets you adjust the music and sound effects independently, the game sometimes forgets the settings you've made and reverts to the default volume. For example, after you complete a set of levels you get a picture and during this the music volume jumps back up to the ear-piercingly loud default level. You have to manually turn it back down again. This also happens every time you start a new game. While the sound effects volume doesn't go up in those situations, it does if an in-progress game is interrupted by an alert, and in this case when you look at the sound effects volume setting it appears to be what you had set it at, even though the volume has gone up higher. You have to move the sound effects volume up and then put it back to where it was, and then the volume is correct again. These aren't huge deals, but they are an annoyance I hope will be fixed in an update. Chimps Ahoy! is a fantastic and high quality game that is well worth the new asking price of only $5. I probably wouldn't have minded the original $10 price, although at that price I didn't buy it and so didn't find out until now how great this game is. For me, lowering the price to $5 made all the difference. Good move Griptonite Games! I put this game on par with Dizzy Bee, and that's saying a lot. With the new lower and more reasonable price, hopefully more people will pick this up and discover how great it is.
Great Game, One Big Problem
I liked the free version so much, I upgraded. The game is cute, clever, and so much fun!! But I can't access anything higher than the first 10 levels and when I wrote to the website support, the e-mail was returned as invalid. Even with the limited access, it's a lot of fun, but I could have saved my $ and kept the free version.
So Addicted!
This game is so cute - I am totally addicted. The music is a perfect background to this game and I love destroying the ships. FUN!
