Exactly what I was hoping for...

Loving how I can take a awesome looking rpg out with me wherever I go! I can grind away whenever I got the time with this on the iphone too! I quickly got used to the controls and really have no complaints with anything really! I even put down playing Dragon Warrior(quest) 7 on psx to play this game.

First and Best

This was the first game I played on my iPhone, and after having played several since, it's still by far my favorite. Anyone who gives it less than five stars deserves to be shot.

A Healthy Game with a Few Hiccups

I picked up this game by suggestion of a friend. Overall, I really enjoyed the classic RPG feel but felt that the game was also lacking in polish. It's the kind of stuff that a good QA tester can hammer out.

The game does a good job of conveyance in some places, but lacks it in others. When you start the game, the first screen you see is a dragon with text below it that says "Continue". Continue what? I had only just got the game. And then when I hit continue, I was able to choose between 3 different chapters. I was confused about whether I should do the first one first or if it would matter or if the "chapters" we're even connected storylines.

Dying created some issues too. At the beginning, I died in the first cave and reappeared next to the woodsman who I met earlier. He gave me another stick for a weapon and I quickly found out I could level until death, then keep getting sticks from this dude and eventually sell them for 5g each (you don't lose items at death).

In addition, I had to talk to this woodsman every time I died, but didn't have to keep going back to get the lantern again. Not having a lantern in my inventory confused me about whether I had to redo that or not, especially when story-wise, this guy was sending me out to get it.

Combat is definitely a throwback I enjoyed. It reminded me a bit of Earthbound, which put a smile on my face. The only problem is that it demands very little thought to succeed. You hit him. He hits you. You can heal until your MP runs out and hope you have an herb, but there's really no strategy involved. This would be okay if some monsters didn't hit like a truck, taking near a third of you life in one hit.

So the game has some balance issues and progression gates. Sometime you're told something but it doesn't happen (I was never actually given a lantern item after he said "here, have it") and dying seems to cause potential breaks in the design and flow.

It is by no means a bad game. It has many elements that make those of us who were born in the 80's get tingling toes like when we were playing on the SNES. I'm very much looking forward to experiencing the rest of the story too. The game just needs several more QA iterations to tighten up the design.

All in all, buy the game, play it while you have downtime and watch as you spend a couple hours playing, thinking that you've been playing for only 10 minutes. Just be careful with the awkward design hiccups and push through them--hopefully the devs will fix them in subsequent updates.
