DVR Shows

By Rick Maddy

Open iTunes to buy and download apps.

Description

Now you can see what's been recorded on your TiVo from anywhere in the house, without the need to turn on your TV.

DVR Shows allows you to see what programs are currently stored on your DVR (Digital Video Recorder). You can drill down into folders and view details about specific shows.

Features:
* Supports TiVo® DVRs
* Track any number of DVRs
* Display by date or alphabetical
* List shows with or without folder groups
* View program details

Note: For users looking to watch their programs please keep this in mind - it can't be done with an iPhone or iPod Touch. A 30 minute standard definition recording is about 500MB in size. It would take 30 minutes to download to the iPhone, then another long wait while the file is converted into a format suitable for the iPhone. There are tools for your computer that will do this conversion. You can then sync those videos with your iPhone or iPod Touch. Sorry, but this application doesn't (and can't) allow you to watch your recordings.

To access your TiVo® you will need the network address and Media Access Key. You can obtain these from your TiVo® menu. This assumes your TiVo is using a network connection and not a phone line.

Network Address:
From "TiVo Central" select the "Messages & Settings" menu. Then "Settings". Then "Phone & Network". The network address is labeled "IP addr.:" and can be seen in the upper right corder of the screen.

Media Access Key:
From "TiVo Central" select the "Messages & Settings" menu. Then "Account & System Information". Then select "Media Access Key". The key is a 10 digit number shown at the bottom of the screen.

Privacy:
This application makes a secure network connection to the address you provide for your DVR. The Media Access Key is sent as a password to your DVR. None of this information is sent to anyone except your own DVR.

Can be used when outside of the home as well

The most useful part of this app isn't mentioned explicitly, probably because there's a few additional setup steps needed that are outside the scope of what it can do for you, but with a little extra work, you can check your TiVo Now Playing list from anywhere, even when you're not connected to your home network. If you do the proper port forwarding from the external IP & port of your Internet connection to the internal IP (often in the 192.168.* range) of your TiVo, you just enter the external information (format: 123.45.67.89:1234) into the DVR address field when adding a DVR. The instructions will differ for various routers, but in a nutshell, you need your external IP (try whatismyip.com) and then forward TCP traffic from a random port (pick a 5 digit one below 65536) to the TiVo's internal IP on port 443. Look for instructions on 'port forwarding' or 'port mapping' in your router's admin interface. This port is then added after a colon to the end of the external IP address when you add a new TiVo. The great part is, you can even map multiple DVRs behind the same home router. Just make sure that you map a different port on the same external IP to port 443 of each of your TiVo's internal IPs. You will also have to make sure that your external IP is static, or use a service like dyndns.org to get a consistent hostname that points to a dynamic IP address that might change over time.

Does What It Claims

This app does precisely what it claims... it functions like the TiVo dashboard widgets on Mac OS X. I can be somewhere else in the house, talking with my roommate, and we can be discussing whether to go out to a movie, go play games, or whatever... and I can tap this to see, 'well, we have <x> waiting on the TiVo.' This app does precisely that, without any extra bells and whistles. Speaking as a developer, there's no convenient way the app's author could make it download/view the shows unless the TiVo was running one of the TiVo-hack modified builds, set up to handle streaming. TiVo's stock download functionality is incredibly slow, and due to how the iPhone OS works, there's no way the download could be done in the background. Because you can't play the file streamed -- you have to convert it into a non-TiVo format -- you would have to have the entire file download and then be converted. You would have to start the download going, let the app sit there for a good 20 minutes, then let the conversion happen (another 10-15). I sure wouldn't use that feature; at that point, you could probably have just walked over to the TiVo and watched the program. :) As for scheduling things, that /would/ be my killer feature. But TiVo doesn't provide an API for scheduling programs save to their service partners like Amazon and Yahoo, who generate scheduling via the TiVo servers and have the program settings picked up on the next sync. I'm sure if they added a way to do that, the developer here would add the functionality to his app, and then I'd be thrilled. But otherwise, the only way to handle remote scheduling is either through TiVo's (not-easily-scriptable) website, or to have your TiVo OS hacked.

Works great

I don't know what everyone is so fussed about. I like the convenience of checking my recordings without always having to turn on the TV.
