Classic game plagued by bugs and control issues
Let me start by saying that the Ecco series is one of my favorites of all time, so when I saw this on the iTunes store I jumped all over it. I don't regret having bought simply because I love the challenge that this game provides; however in just a short while of playing I've really become frustrated with a fair chunk of the gameplay.
To begin, the d-pad is too small to be used effectively. For other games that Sega's released (Sonic games) it works because you only have to move left or right, but in a game such as this where diagonal movement is so important, you really need a larger d-pad for more precise movement. Being able to resize/move both the d-pad and the ABC buttons (something I've seen in plenty of other ipod games) would be an easy fix.
Secondly, there seem to be some issues with health and air disappearing randomly. I've had a few occasions where my health and air either drop incredibly quickly or they just outright disappear and I die (the latter occurring mainly after exiting the sonar map).
The third main issue I've noticed is that the grabbing arms in the first few levels can be difficult or impossible to escape from due to 1) them pulling you just inside the edge of the rocks they're attached to, making you unable to charge at all (buttons become unresponsive), 2) huge slowdown in the game's framerate -- the game goes to about 1/4 normal speed depending on the direction you choose to try to escape from them. I've been unable to finish the fourth level "The Lagoon" as a result of these issues.
Lastly, a suggestion for future updates: Implementing a quick save would be nice. It's not essential, but it would save having to play through ten minutes of a level over and over again just to get to the part at the end that you keep dying at.
The game is meant to be very difficult, and that's what I like about it, but it seems to be a bit more buggy than anything else right now, easily sapping the fun I could be having. This Ecco is close to being great, but it still needs a little bit of work. I'll look forward to any improvements and (hopefully) the release for Tides of Time sometime down the line.
Awesome SEGA title
When I was little, I only played the Sonic games on my sega. I never got the chance to play this game until now, and i love it!! Nice work Sega. Now for Sonic CD??
Thank you!
Thank you SEGA for giving me my childhood back one game after another.
Finally one of my favorite titles, that I spent countless hours playing, is back in the palm of my hands.
