Almost sheer perfection!
I've been trying iOS apps for years, ever since I got my first iPhone and the App Store first opened. Since then, I've seen a lot of good apps, but unfortunately I've tried a lot of bad apps which I've deleted straight away. Some of my favourite apps are puzzle apps, as I find that they last a long time and actually get me thinking rather than just touching the screen. So, having seen this on the iPhone, I jumped at the chance of being able to play a classic, mahjong, but with an amazing twist… it's in 3D making it something different and unique. At first, I tried this on the iPhone, which I have also reviewed, but since I had completed that, I decided to try the iPad version. I've seen many apps before that have simply been bigger versions of the iPhone versions, which means they aren't very good. Thankfully, this is actually a really good iPad game, so good so, that I can actually see this staying on my device for a long time to come. The only major problem is the lack of Retina support for the new iPad, but apart from that, it's perfection.
In the game, you have to use your matching ability to match everything together. This might seem easy, but it's the 3D that adds a twist that makes this a great game. You have to try and find 3 matching cubes. I like that this game makes everything clear, whereas other games can sometimes be difficult to see when you're in a rush as they look very similar, so the developer clearly cares about this game. A lot of games also make you use arrows, so it's nice that this game has touch, so you can simply swipe to move around the shape. This is crucial as it's a lot easier, especially when you're under time pressure! On the iPad, you have plenty of space to be able to navigate and click not he buttons that you want, again showing that the developer actually cares about the app rather than just producing something to make money, and when that happens, it usually always results in a better experience. It's great to play when you're in a rush, maybe waiting in line for an ice cream, as you can just play one quick level at a time, or if you're sitting down relaxing at home, as you can just get immersed in the mahjong.
The experience is also really good in regards to the design, apart from the lack of Retina support. If this would come, it would look brilliant, and fix the only problem. I'm sure that it looks great on pervious iPads, but it's a but of a sticking point for the new iPad. Also, it's really nice that the ads don't get in the way. I've played games before where I would constantly keep on clicking the ads when I was trying to play the game. Thankfully, it's not like this in Fairy Cubes, and although there is ads, they aren't in the way. You might have to view them to continue, but that's a small price to pay for this great game. I haven't accidentally clicked one once in all the time that I have been playing this game on the iPad. I thought the iPhone version was good, but this is even better in terms of the design, as the bigger screen really seems great, giving you plenty of freedom to click on different things and swipe around the shapes. With this in mind, I found it slightly easier than the iPhone as the bigger screen gives you the space to make a few more errors. The game is solid and didn't crash, so I didn't lose and progress or have to start again.
If you don't mind the ads, this is the perfect game. It's free and it's got hours and hours of fun. With the different levels on offer (45 in total!) it had plenty of things to keep me occupied for quite a long time… and I'm usually somebody who rushes through games. With the difficultly levels it's also got the replayability factor so it lasts even longer. You can start on an easy difficulty and move up, and it's fun enough to do again as the challenge it represents is the perfect balance between fun and thinking. So although it has 45 levels… it's really like it has 135! That's more than you get in games that you pay for. This also means that it is a great app for anybody of any skill level as you can ease into it without having to do something difficult straight away. Both young and old will find something in this little gem for them. Basically, it's great value at free, so much that it's worth buying the full version as it's one of the most fun-packed apps that I have used.
I'd love to see more levels added. Not because it hasn't got many, it's actually got a enough. I just find it something that has been so well that I would like some more. Maybe they could come with in app purchase or something! I would also really like the see GameCenter. A lot of other apps have it, and I've found that it makes me play the app even more. This is because I love being competitive so I then try and compete and get to the top! Nothing better than spending time having fun and then seeing your name at the top! I know that the developer has done other fairy based themes, but I'd love to see other, non-fairy apps. Maybe we could have a summer theme, based on the beach, or maybe something more traditional. The unique 3D puzzle feature is the main selling point of the app and I just wouldn't want anybody to be put off by the fairy theme as it's worth playing. With added Retina support, the themes could really show off the power of the new iPad. It would be my main wish for this app.
Overall, this is something that I would recommend to anybody. For free, you can't go wrong and it gets even better once you consider that it's the perfect mix of fun and challenge, while also providing hours and hours of fun. It's something that every iPad owner should have on their device. If you're a fan of mahjong, you'll love this as it's incredibly unique, or if you've never played it before you'll love this as it is an excellent puzzle game. This is certainly something that will be staying on my device for a long time to come, and would be perfection if it wasn't for the Retina support, but I'm sure that will come.
