Best RSS Reader, Hands Down!!!

This is the first review I have ever written for an iPhone app. I have downloaded dozens of apps thus far and never wrote a single review, but somehow I felt compelled to write a review for this app, so here it goes…

I have been an avid blog reader for the past few years. Coming from a BlackBerry 8330 (to the iPhone of course), I used to use a program called Viigo (a free RSS reader) to stay up to date with my feeds. Ever since I made the jump to the iPhone, I have been looking for something to fill that void. I must admit that I have not tried all of the other RSS readers for the iPhone, except for a few free ones. Although, the few readers that I did try seemed to lack the basic functionality I was looking for, until recently.

So far, Feeds is the only application that is worthy of the one available slot on my home screen! If you are an avid blog reader (such as myself) and you are looking for a solid app with a clean UI then this is the one!!!

Pros:
• Excellent feed search, best implementation I’ve seen thus far
• App Icon is consistent with other native iPhone icons, shows the number of unread items just like the email icon does
• Clean interface that is consistent with native pre-loaded iPhone apps (Mail, Contacts, SMS, etc).
• Multiple color schemes to choose from (Green, Blue, Black & Orange)
• Ability to ‘star’ items, very similar to Gmail’s star feature

Cons:
• Not enough preset feeds, there are a lot of RSS feeds out there and there should be way more presets to choose from
• “View Page” feature is unstable, although this is a known issue and has been documented in the app description

Also, I think it is worth mentioning that the two cons on my list are extremely minimal. The first one has been easily overcome by the outstanding search feature. I have been able to search for feeds that are not in the preset list and easily subscribe to them with just a few taps.

With that said, the application has far surpassed my expectations and I’m certain that the developers will be enhancing the application in future updates.

To the developers, I must say that you guys have done a wonderful job with this app. It’s a phenomenal start and I look forward to future updates. I know that I have mentioned Viigo ealier in this review as I have used it for almost 2 years and it was an excellent product. If you guys can get your hands on a copy of it, I suggest looking at their implementation. There are a few things that we can all learn from them as they have been in the game for a while and they have pretty much nailed it down perfectly.

Aside from that, here are few suggestions that I think will make this app even better than it already is.

• App should provide the ability to read the entire feed item. At times the RSS feed is simply a preview of the full article. It would be nice to be able to click “View full article” and have the app download the rest of the article in plain text without having to click “View Page” which can be slow and unstable at times. Viigo does this by downloading the article from it's URL, stripping out any HTML tags (with a simple RegEx) and displaying it as plain text.
• App should provide the ability to automatically delete old feed items if there is no more space for new feed items. For example, if I have reached my preset limit for a particular feed (say 400 items), the application should delete the oldest feed items (read items first, then unread items) to free up space for new items.
• “Items per feed” should have a “No Limit” option, although I’m not sure if the iPhone SDK will permit this as their may be a limit on the amount of physical memory each app can consume.
• Provide the ability to specify the duration each read/unread feed item should be kept for. For example, Keep all feed items for: 5 days, 10 days, 20 days, Forever, etc
• Browsable feeds should be broken down into categories and subcategories rather than having them all bunched up on one page. I should be able to drill down into feed categories and subcategories until I find the feed I’m looking for (similar to how the iPod app lets you select a song - Artist >> Album >> Song)
• Add a “View Page in Safari” option to load the feed in Safari

Thank you for creating this wonderful app, I use it every day and I absolutely love it!

Keep up the great work!

-Randy

Excellent job!

Finally a reliable STABLE RSS reader. Adding new feeds is easy with the search feature or simply typing in the URL. The only reason I gave it four stars instead of five was that it is missing a few basic features that I think would really make this app grand...

1. There needs to be a "Mark as Read" option.
2. There needs to be a delete option for read articles and for ones you choose to skip.
3. There needs to be a "Next" & "Previous" button in the active article screen.
4. Zoom funtionality would be nice especially when viewing some photo blogs.

This app is very well put together with options to Star articles, email to friends, view original in safari buttons. The interface is simple and straight forward. I was able to add 15 of my favorite sites in under two minutes with the search feeds funtion. Best listing/access of feeds I have ever seen for an RSS reader. Great deal for 99 cents.

Great RSS News Reader

This was the news reader I'd been waiting for - very simple to set up and works like a reader should - great for the non-tech person - a great feature is the ability to change the position of each of your feeds in the list, this way when you enter them you don't have to worry about what order you entered your feeds, you can group them after entry - for the future it would be nice if it offered offline readable content, but that is no reason not to get this now and hope with future upgrades that feature will be included. Can't beat the price, I like it so much I'd be willing to pay more now that I've used it.
