GAIA, Don't leave home without it
Especially useful if you're heading out into the field and need GPS help. It's not only simple to use, Gaia has everything I need to get around in the back country, and it's spectacular to view detail or broad views on the Ipad3 with the brush of 2 fingers. It's not frustrating like many GPS apps. I actually found it to be fun to use. I've never said that about a GPS app before.
New version full of bugs --to get it to work at all required losing all my data!
Update: 4/8, I have been attempting to get this app to work for a few days and have discovered my own "workaround" that makes this functional again. I am still unhappy with the trouble created by the last release, but am moving my rating back up to 3 stars, since the app seems to be functioning ok with my workaround (i can get it to behave by getting around the bad behavior). Time will tell if the developer has learned the hard way about taking shortcuts with testing, and future releases become a happier experience...
One can only hope.
4/4/2012 (original review) Guess what. This was a good app. No more. Save yourself some grief and money. Try "trimble outdoors navigator" instead--it's free! And it does all this app (is supposed to) and more.
When I posted a suggestion that a specific bug be fixed (in developer suggestion box), the developer closed the issue and said that the issue did not exist! Maybe on his device! What kind of support is that? Nothing good for sure. I've moved on to Trimble. And now that I'm using Trimble--it is clear what to expect from a pro developer. Very clean and well designed. Gaia is sub-par by comparison.
Gaia GPS works!
This app is GREAT! I have been using GPS on TOPO maps for years but now I don't need a laptop or lots of money. Works instantly on my iPhone 4. While connected to the internet I defined the area I needed by dragging my boundaries on the main map and downloaded the complete USGS map set. Now when I am out of cell range and have no wi-fi, I can navigate the roads, trails and creeks with ease.
