Almost perfect!
This is a great game, not just a great TD game. Addictive, fun, and often requires a lot of thought. Not for those who never like to lose, some levels require a lot of trial and error before they can be beat. Gameplay is intense and levels are well designed. The graphics are fantastic, the sounds are better than a lot of iPhone games (lasers sound especially cool with headphones), and the ability to listen to your own music while playing is great, though original in-game music would be cool. Despite being probably my favorite iPhone game, geodefense does have some problems.
1. Placement of towers is a little iffy, and often times I find myself very carefully placing a tower in the perfect spot only to have it move as I take my finger off the screen. Also, some places where a tower should definitely fit do not let you place them there (especially in certain loops where one tower will fit fine but another type won't.)
2. The inclusion of an undo button would be nice. Many times I find I accidentally chose the wrong tower to build, or accidentally dropped it before I meant to, into a useless spot. Also a lot of the time I drag a tower out to build it, but decide against it- so I try to drag the tower back to the bottom of the screen to get rid of it. Sometimes this works, but sometimes it results in the tower being built at the very bottom of the screen. An undo button would fix this! And to keep the screen uncluttered, perhaps it could just replace the 'sell' button for a few seconds on the new tower, and after the time runs out the tower can't be undone, only sold.
3. There should be some more in-depth instructions given, and viewable all at once instead of having to play through tutorial levels to learn the basics step by step. Certain useful functions are not easily learned such as double tapping a laser tower to lock it's angle, and targetting a creep by tapping it.
4. Regarding said laser tower locking trick, it would be very useful to be able to manually set the angle of the tower instead of having to wait for it to turn in the desired direction and quickly tapping before it moves again.
5. More numbers! HP of creeps, tower firing power, firing rate, upgrade bonuses... All of this would be great to know, and would help in strategy development.
6. Rather than hard, medium, and easy levels, why not have all the levels playable at different difficulties? There are some really cool level designs in the easy and medium sets that I would love to play at a harder setting.
7. This game SCREAMS for an endless mode and a level editor/creator. I don't understand why more TD games don't have these features, they would easily increase the replay value a ton.
8. Last, and this isn't so much a gripe as wishful thinking, some new towers would be cool, like one that could increase the firing rate of nearby towers, or a 360 degree damage tower (I think there may be one like this in swarm?).
Easily one of the best games out there
Let me put it to you this way: You can't go wrong with geoDefense. This is the most addicting and fun game I have found on the app store. However, I have found a few bugs. On a level (I forget what it's called right now) I was able to set and upgrade anything for free. Then when I tried playing the level again it quit out of the game.
Retro Tower Defense That Delivers!
I'm a huge fan of 7 Cities, and it's really the only TD game I play...and then comes geoDefense. What an amazing variation on TD games that not only gives a new twist on the genre, but really takes it in a whole new direction. The first thing you'll notice is the look. Too many try too hard with the the retro theme, but geoDefense just feels right. The sound effects and the audio voices add depth to geoDefense. While the visuals are nothing compared to the detail in say 7 Cities, the retro approach works well in this app. In fact, you could say the visuals in geoDefense are more appealing than those in other TD games because of how the dev has packaged all of this. You have a variety of weapons from turrets to lasers mixed in with a variety of attackers. As with any TD game, it's about placing your weapons and defenses in the most appropriate spot to destroy enemies. The more enemies you destroy, the more money you have to upgrade existing defenses or buy new ones. It's simple in concept but difficult in practice. While the look is the obvious differentiator, the gameplay is even better as you deal with waves of attacks matched by explosions and fireworks. While there are three settings: easy, medium and difficult, you'll find even on the easy setting that geoDefense is a monster of a challenge. This app forces you to think and strategize, and the easy setting alone will keep you busy for a while. One minor tweak that would make geoDefense perfect is in how you place defenses. Right now, when you place defenses with your finger, your finger prevents you from being especially accurate because you don't have a clear view, and once something is placed, you can't move it. geoDefense is an app that hopefully more people hear about and try. I think geoDefense has caught many people by surprise in terms how polished visually and in gameplay it is. If you're into the TD genre, you'll definitely want to add geoDefense to your library. If you're new to TD apps, my advice is to get some experience with other TD games before attempting this...I'm serious.
