A Wonderful Glu Game!
This game is a delight to play, dazzling to look at and hard to put down. There are tons of things to do.
In my opinion, this is the best "adventure" title to grace the iDevice thus far! Seriously, kudos to Glu Mobile I don't think EA or Gameloft could have done better....but, please, please update this with tilt calibration and then, Glyder is the best game in the App Store!!
Serene, enthralling game
I can't put the game down. The "feel" of flying the Glyder, the music, the beauty of the environments - all of it just works and it's a pleasure to play. Really enjoy exploring the worlds and getting sucked in to the experience.
Beautiful, Calm and Epic
This is the first iPhone game that I'm jealous I didn't develop, simply based on its elegance and beauty, as well as the sheer fun. Flying the Eryn character around in her glider has a lyrical quality that is not present in any other game I've played (although Armado comes close). The controls are elegant and really make you feel like you are floating on the air, and catching thermals on a canvas set of bird wings. The environments are beautiful though stylized in a storybook way. They are also deep and very explorable. The music is soothing and truly adds to the atmosphere instead of being an annoying background, and the sfx, as the canvas snaps into place as the wind fills it, adds to the experience. It is challenging enough to reward practice and provide some rigor, but isn't so insanely hard only a gamer can do it, and doesn't suffer from the flaw of going from easy to so daunting that you put it down. The balance is great.
I also like that it has no enemies or violence. I'm cool with fighting et. all, but its nice to have a game where its lowers your blood pressure and puts you in a pleasurable trance rather than causing sweat to break out. In this way, it reminds me of the landmark that was Myst back in the day, or even a serene World of Warcraft in its fairytale quality. Beyond this, the gameplay mechanics are brilliant. At first, it seems like a simple ho-hum "collect the crystals" game, but the achievement system -- obviously in fact inspired by WoW's great new version of this system -- provides it great depth, as you are rewarded for things like soaring high, coasting for extra long on a thermal, exploring a cavern or swooping a town.
Finally, I had expected that going from zone-to-zone on the map would follow the typical mobile convention of "opening up new areas" on the map and you tap to go there. I was pleasantly surprised to find that when new areas opened up, they appear on the map, but actually the fog lifts and you FLY there over the sea -- there is actual spatial relationships between the areas, as in a full-on exploration game.
My only wishlist is that it would open itself to internet play where you could encounter other gliding wanderers, customize your characters and have a system wherein you could upgrade your rig/customize your flightsuit. In other words, make it something of a tiny MMO world. And keep adding zones! I'd even be willing to pay like a buck a month for an MMO-like expansion of this.
