Description

gpsCompass DOES NOT work on the iPod Touch because it does not have GPS hardware on the device

**********
To celebrate the new release of our handheld GPS application gpsPrime, we are temporarily reducing the price of gpsCompass. Get them both now at a great low price and get your navigation on!

**********

gpsCompass has been newly updated to support the iPhone 3GS built-in magnetic compass and add a couple new compass styles.

On your iPhone 3GS, gpsCompass now uses the internal magnetic compass to provide the natural smooth movement of a floating compass. You can also switch back to satellite-based GPS compass that requires movement by pressing the Magnet/Satellite button in the lower left corner of the screen. This is helpful when traveling in a car, plane, or surrounded near other large metal or electronic devices that interfere with the magnetic compass signal.

In preferences, there is now an old-school Brass Compass for those serious navigators and there is a Rubber Chicken on a Plate for those looking for a little humor in their orienteering.

Know where you are and where you are going with this gpsCompass application for the iPhone 3G and 3GS.

Using Apple iPhone’s Location Services, this application displays a GPS compass and common GPS data fields to help you find your location and track your movement.

Want to let a friend know where you are? Send them your current location as a Google Map link. Friends with iPhones or other web enabled cell phones can use the map to get right to you.

Boaters and pilots can turn on nautical measurements. Reverse geocoding even provides the name of your current location. Surveyors can use gpsCompass to obtain State Plane readings. You can even customize the look to match your cars dashboard.

FEATURES:
• GPS compasses
- standard 'Handheld GPS' compass
- 'Scout' compass
- 'Science Fair' compass
- 'Nautical Heading' compass
• GPS information
• Customizable data fields
• Metric or Standard measurements
• Terrestrial or Nautical measurements
• Decimal or DD°MM'SS" readings
• Trip Reset
• Send your location to a friend
• 21 data fields
Nearest Location, Accuracy, Altitude, Max Alt, Min Alt, Avg Alt, Heading, Latitude, Longitude, Odometer, Speed, Max Speed, Min Speed, Avg Speed, Moving Average, Timer, Vertical Speed, 4 State Plane Coordinate fields (US Only)

PLEASE NOTE:
• DOES NOT work on the iPod Touch because it does not have GPS hardware on the device
• on an iPhone 3G, gpsCompass displays where you are heading in motion, not which direction you are facing - nothing can.
• on an iPhone 3Gs, gpsCompass leverages the built in magnetic compass hardware to give you a fluidly moving compass you expect
• gpsCompass does NOT require 3G or any network connectivity to do most of its features. Only reverse-geolocating (human readable name from Lat/Lon) requires it. It works great at sea!

Customer Reviews

Don't purchase gpsCompass for your iPod Touch!

Although the blurb accompanying gpsCompass says it works with iPod Touch, it does not. When I asked the developer why it wouldn't work on my Touch, I received this:

There was a mistake with the App store submission.
It should have been submitted for iPhone 3G only. (with GPS)
we're looking in to solving this currently.

Roy Lovejoy

Anonymity is an interesting thing.

To everyone who said "it didn't work"- why haven't any customers bothered to send a single email to support, in the last 5 months, informing us of any problem?
We find it very strange that 70 people give it a 1 star, yet there have only been around 12 support emails *ever*, 4 of them curious about why the compass doesn't work when you turn it on and are standing still, or inside an office building- the other 8 were saying what a cool app it was.
If a real customer were to really have a bug, it's customary to send in a bug report to support, the bug would be fixed, and everyone would enjoy a free update with the fix.
But as far as our testers, and our customers have seen, the product works great- quite the opposite all of these negative reviews.
Just to clear things up-
* in EVERY GPS app in this store, you have to be MOVING in order for bearings/compass direction to be calculated correctly.
there's no free lunch, EVERY APP deals with the same APIs. The iPhone can't -magically- figure out where it is pointing.
* EVERY GPS app in this store has bogus altitude readings. EVERY GPS app. There's a bug in Apple's Location Manager (radar #6209059 & 6094521). When that bug is fixed, everyone wins. (Have you noticed that Apple doesn't have altitude in any of their apps?)
There really is no explanation for these terse negative reviews, when the rest of the 35,000 some people are quite satisfied, and aren't spewing misinformation on these reviews.

Does exactly what it says

Man, I just don't understand the pathetic comments all over the app store. No software will make your iphone magically become a compass. Just like a handheld GPS, the iphone knows where it is and where it just was, which can then be used to figure out what direction you're traveling, and therefore where north is. Presuming you're moving, this application does that very well, and unlike some of the other compass apps, also provides other GPS data such as elevation, rate of climb, an odometer, etc. It does those things quite well, it has an elegant interface, and is well worth a measly $1.99. It's not meant to be a full navigation system. BTW, the control at the bottom of the settings page looks like it resets fields such as the odometer.
