Featured in the NY TImes, LA Times, Wired Autopia, and other publications, greenMeter is an app for the iPhone and iPod Touch that computes your vehicle's power and fuel usage characteristics and evaluates your driving to increase efficiency, reduce fuel consumption and cost, and lower your environmental impact. Results are displayed in real time, while driving, to give instantaneous feedback.
Though it's most effective on the road, you can learn from greenMeter even before you get in the car. By tipping the device forward and backward to simulate acceleration, you can see the effects of acceleration, aerodynamic drag, and rolling resistance across the speed range. Then implement this knowledge on the road, by choosing an efficient cruising speed and using the built-in eco-driving displays to moderate acceleration while you drive.
Thanks to a novel algorithm that computes parameters over the entire speed range, the app does not need GPS, opening usage up to all generations of the iPhone and iPod Touch.

Notes: greenMeter can compute data in US or metric units. The software offers two calibration options for the accelerometer, one to correct internal offsets, and the other to set the forward direction when the device is positioned in a vehicle. Settings and preferences (including inputs to specify vehicle, weather, and fuel characteristics) are accessed from the "i" button. To switch between the various graph modes, just tap the display.

Love it.
This app is very useful when you are trying to watch your acceleration in relations to mpg. I purchased the app 3 days ago (I usually go through a full tank of gas in 3 days) and can honestly say this app has aided me in getting an additional 1.5 mpg, with little effort, just by seeing where I waste most of my fuel.
Interesting App
The color-changing leaf visualization was enough by itself to make me buy it.
A couple thoughts for consideration in future versions:
(1) Data don't seem to be saved once the app is closed. It would seem that retaining data between sessions and providing long-term statistics on driving behavior would be highly useful.
(2) I expected the app to function like the fuel efficiency gauge in many cars (not mine though), so I'd know with one familiar number (MPG) approximately how efficiently I'm driving. If the app also made use of GPS I'd think this wouldn't be too difficult to implement.
Promising overall; great use of iPhone sensors. I look forward to future versions.
