Customer Reviews
Still does not support +1 infront of your number, horrible customer service + quality
Even with the new version, you cannot call any numbers with full standard formatting ( +1 (xxx) xxx-xxxx). It immediately gives you a "Call Ended," I'm guessing is that iCall believes you are trying to call internationally.
From the test call that I made within the app, sound quality seemed very below average as VoIP goes. The person said my voice did sound alright but to me, his voice sounded like he was talking through a paper bag.
Another gripe is the cost, Skype costs $3/month for unlimited VoIP to anywhere in the US\Canada + $20/year for your own number. Now that there is an official Skype App, I can't find myself paying ~$7 more a month for the call transfer ability.
iCall has disallowed any public posting on their facebook group due to people providing feedback and bug reports. They are very anti-customer and it seems that they are in this market to purely make money. They do not listen to feedback and the second a potential competition is mentioned, you are banned and your posts are deleted. They have been VERY rude in this whole process of approval wait and have become worse after the fact.
iCall has also asked users, in their forums, to go on the appstore, find negative reviews and "rate it as 'unhelpful' and second report it to apple as being off topic and offensive" since "The more complaints that apple receives about a review, the more frequently they will remove it." They are just trying to cover themselves from a bad product and bad service.
They have charged me $10 for prepaid calling credit when I specifically said I did not want to deposit any money for prepaid or international calls in the trial version:
Here are the charge:
$10.00 Prepaid calling credit Wednesday, March 25th, 2009 at 2:48PM
Needing a credit card for the trial was shady, now this is borderline fraud.
iCall loves to spread false pricing information on their competitors on their webpage and on their facebook fan page. On their Facebook page they state misleading Skype information:
- "$2.95/month for usa/canada unlimited" - this is the only thing they got correct
- "there is a 15% tax on top of everything at skype and we include taxes in our cost" - wrong, there are no additional taxes
- "2.1c per minute to forward calls" - wrong, users have unlimited forwarding to phones covered under their plans
- "5.00 for your own phone #" - again, wrong - if you sign up for the $2.95/month for unlimited US\canada calling, you automatically get a $30 discount on a personal number, making it cost $30 a year or $2.50 a month
- "Skype charges a 5 cent connection fee per call as well" - wrong, my bills prove it. I use skype over 15 hours a month and have never been charged more than the $2.95 for the unlimited US\Canada subscription
So when you add all the costs for skype it costs $2.95/month unlimited US\canada + $2.50/month IF you want your own number (most people use voip for outgoing mainly) = $5.45/month for your own number and unlimited calls to US\canada, no strings attached.
Hopefully future versions fixes these problems and they rethink their "total access" plan pricing.
The perfect business model ...
... for a complete disaster!
Too much misleading information and hype. Like many others, I have waited with apprehension for this application to arrive. I make a lot of calls to Africa, which through most routes are very expensive. Vonage works well but not on a mobile.
So - at last iCall comes online. After an inauspicious start when I paid but my credit was not recognized - I discovered that the mere act of PLACING a call costs money. Yep - each time you dial a number in Africa you get charged 14c. I say again - each time you DIAL a number you pay to place the call - the fact that the call is never answered is irrelevant. I queried this policy and am still awaiting a response.
I so wanted this company to succeed - I, like many others, will overlook the shortcomings of a 1.0 rollout and give them the benefit of the doubt - but you have to accompany this with a "sorry folks - we need to get our act together - give us a few days and we appreciate any feedback you have to help us get this application up to speed".
If they rescind the charges for placing a call and admit it's an error - and they get the application working properly I'm still prepared to give iCall a go. The interface is nice - although I have to confess that TruPhone is really pretty good AND it will accept numbers in the standard +XXX... format. In the meantime - I'd steer 100 miles away from this application. Who knows how difficult it's going to be to wrest one's credit card away from them.
Update 3/29/09:
I wondered why this application was suddenly getting a lot of 5* ratings so I went to the company's website - and lo and behold - instructions for the faithful:
"So we are asking for your assistance in making sure that potential users of the application get a fair view of the product that we have launched.
With just 30 seconds of your time you can be of great assistance to us... which in turn will help to bring new customers to our platform.. which in turn will increase our inventory of more rural numbers and will allow us to justify adding features such as visual voicemail among others.
So how can you help? Simple... just open iTunes, visit the iCall product page and do the following:
1) Give us a 5 star rating... we'd like it, if you feel 5 isnt deserved then please rate it appropriately.
2) Give us a fair and balanced review... point out the things you like about the product, how it helps you and feel free to point out the things that you would like to see changed.
3) If you see a comment that is not actually a review of the application itself but rather an attack on our pricing, our customer service, or a complaint about expectations of free calling then just do the following. First rate it as "unhelpful" and second report it to apple as being off topic and offensive.
The more complaints that apple receives about a review, the more frequently they will remove it.
The more people who rate a comment as "not helpful" the lower down on the list it goes, the more people who rate a comment as "helpful" the higher up it goes...
So please, help us out by posting fair and balanced reviews, rating us with a fair rating, and push down the reviews that are clearly serving no purpose but to try and name call or complain."
Take that iPhone!!!
Yes! I can make calls on my iPod! This app is great! I'm surprised it's not #1!
