Description

iCED for iPhone and iPod touch presents a unique way to use a Chinese dictionary. After you've found the entry you were searching for, iCED will continue to search for compound or component entries to complement your search. Component entry dissection allows you to quickly understand the meaning of components in longer words or phrases. For example, if you look up 中华人民共和国, iCED will also look up 中华 and 人民共和国. You can then select the latter to break it up into 人民 and 共和国. When you get to single characters, iCED will look up compound entries starting with that character.

Indispensable!

Easily the most comprehensive C-E dictionary available (the complete version of DeFrancis’ “ABC Chinese-English Comprehensive Dictionary” which weighs more than 14 iPhones at >1,400 pages). Unlike most pinyin dictionaries, which are arranged by character, the ABC uses a purely alphabetic arrangement. For example, in a traditional dictionary, “yinwei” comes before “yingguo” because all the “yin” characters precede the “ying” ones. In the ABC approach, the simply alphabetic arrangement makes looking up polysyllabic words more natural.

Results are returned quickly as the search term is entered (tones optional), and the definitions are more extensive than most other iPhone dictionaries. There are example sentences, and the meanings of individual characters are independently searchable, allowing you to drill down on meanings. While there's no English to Chinese per se, the search of English definitions comes up with a resulting set of Chinese equivalents, making the functionality basically the same. There's also a history of recent searches, which is handy for translators who forget what they recently looked up. Switching between traditional and simplified is easy, and common tone variations are included. Finally, if having a 200,000 entry dictionary seems overkill, there's another very valuable feature: words are ranked (and marked) in order of common frequency, with more likely candidates at the top.

Given that the hardcover edition cannot perform the digital trickery this application can, let alone can’t fit in your pocket (and costs over $50), I certainly can’t complain about the price. I use this dictionary literally every day and would be lost without it. The developer is very responsive to users concerns and version 1.4, with several enhancements and fixes, was released within weeks of the last release.

FWIW, this dictionary, as extensive as it is, does not entirely eliminate the need for a less expensive CC-CDICT-based dictionaries (like KT-Dict or QingWen). A search for “gongli” in a CDICT may return only half as as many results (70K vs 200K entries after all) but will include the Chinese actress, if that matters to you. 5 STARS!

Excellent Chinese dictionary app

I am very pleased with the Pro version, having tried this out in the Lite variety previously. The specs of the app tell all the features, and I won't repeat them here. I have found that it certainly does everything it advertises and is great fun as well. You can spend literally hours just browsing around--starting with any word you happen to look up. You then click on the character components of the word, which in turn take you to one new word and expression after the other. For an advanced beginner like me, this is extremely illuminating as to the usage of different words and characters. I find I am beginning to absorb the real essence of each word and character as a result.
Looking things up is easy, and the app changes the list of choices dynamically as you type in pinyin entries. It is wonderful to have the Traditional/Simplified toggle button; you can see instantly which characters in a given word are different in the two versions, even flipping back and forth in very rapid succession. The dictionary has a huge number of words and phrases included and will keep most users happy. It does not appear to include "street language," however, so you may come up with nothing if you look up slangy usage from English to Chinese.
I have found the developer to be very responsive to questions and suggestions and am confident that the app will continue to get better and better. It is admittedly a bit pricey, but for the convenience of carrying around this entire 200,000+ dictionary on your iPod it is well worth it. In addition, it is easier to use by far than a print dictionary.
Definitely give the free or Lite version a try if you have doubts; the interface is the same and will give you a great feel for the app.

Not a good update

Don't update, the new update requires you to purchase a new English/ Chinese dictionary for $20??? Why is the new update so not user friendly? I can't believe I updated! Very dissapointed.
