Description

iCED for iPhone and iPod touch presents a unique way to use a Chinese dictionary. After you've found the entry you were searching for, iCED will continue to search for compound or component entries to complement your search. Component entry dissection allows you to quickly understand the meaning of components in longer words or phrases. For example, if you look up 中华人民共和国, iCED will also look up 中华 and 人民共和国. You can then select the latter to break it up into 人民 and 共和国. When you get to single characters, iCED will look up compound entries starting with that character.

[NOTE: Due to the large size of this app, we recommend that you download it with iTunes on your desktop and then sync it to your device.]

FEATURES:
• Multiple dictionaries: CC-CEDICT, CDICT5, Unihan. (ABC CE and EC Dictionaries available as optional add-ons)

• Integrated search across all dictionaries using English words, Chinese characters (using the Chinese hand recognition built into the iPhone OS), Hanyu Pinyin (with or without tone numbers) and radical index.

• Search for the occurrence of a Chinese character or word anywhere in the entry. Browse through the list of results with a thumb index, sorted by where in the entry the search term was found (position 1, position 2, ...)

• Supports both traditional and simplified characters with an easy-toggle button. Great for learners who constantly flip back and forth!

• Word lists. Save your searches in categorized word lists for later review.
• Text on the clipboard will initiate a search on startup.
• Recents tab keeps track of searches for quick review.
• Supports landscape mode, with portrait/landscape lock.

The Best Dictionary Hands Down!

I have five different Chinese/English dictionaries on my touch right now and this is by far the best one. I am currently studying Mandarin and the ability to look up words and then break them down into their different parts is awesome. I will definitely be upgrading to the pro-version when it comes out. Keep up the good work!

beyond my expectations

Really this program is great, also being free. You can search in pin yin or characters, traditional or simplified, and view the results in all the formats too. you can also go from eng to Chinese and when you find the word you can see all related phrases and a close picture of the character to see its strokes. I love it!

Best Chinese-English dictionary app!

This is the one to download. It's awesome that it's free, considering that electronic Chinese-English dictionaries used to go into the hundreds and didn't even have some of the features on here. I had Dian Hua, Qing Wen, and this app on my iPhone for a while, just to see which one was the best. While they were all good, I have narrowed it down to this one. It shows recently searched terms, large versions of the word so you can see the strokes of complicated words, separate definitions of each character in a phrase, extensive vocabulary bank, and nice simple UI. Also, I know this is an iPhone feature and not this app's feature, but I love being able to write out the characters to search. The app is everything I could ask for in a free dictionary, thanks developers!

In the Pro version, it would be great to be able to save lists of characters and have a quiz/flashcard function for these lists. Also looking forward to example sentences.
