That was weak.

Ok, most "lite" versions offer more for someone to actually get into the game enough to want to purchase the full version. Spore Origins LE was a waste of my time. It took longer to to download it over wifi than it took to actually play it. And having played it, I find that while the graphics were very good, game play was a lot to be desired. Tilting the phone only seemed to give very general guidence, and your "creature" mostly did what it wanted. Yes you can make it swim in circles... Whoopee. That's about the most control you have. The rest seems to be random.
And one level. What is that? It wasn't even enough to get me even wondering about the rest of the game.
There are soooo many better games out there. Cheaper too.
Keep moving along, nothing to see here... Really.

Super disappointment

As others have said, only one level making it a huge disappointment and an enormous waste of time for 40.6MB download. I can understand EA not wanting to put too much in the free to still entice people to buy, but one level is just not enough to know whether it's worth the money for the full version or not.

What IS all the fuss about?

I downloaded this demo to try and see if what I had gleaned from the various video reviews of Spore was accurate. Specifically, was the fundamental gameplay simply "Tilt your iPhone around to eat small things and avoid big ones"?

Based on all of the massively glowing five-star reviews of the full game I assumed I was missing something ...

... and, at least, based on this demo, I wasn't.

The production values are high, the graphics are fluid and beautiful, the sound is very nicely done and entirely appropriate, the controls are intuitive and about as natural feeling and well calibrated as one could hope for, and the game itself is so mind numbingly simple that I really cannot fathom what all the five-star reviews are about.

Maybe the "evolution" (read upgrades) adds something, though I cannot see what that would be.

"Snake" and its variants seem to require more thought and technique or strategy than this. True, they are not nearly as pretty or as polished, but in all seriousness, this is just so shallow in how it plays that it is comical. Maybe I am being harsh, the demo is only one level after all, but fundamentally it boils down to steering your "organism" around a large scrolling playfield trying to collide with objects smaller than yourself and avoid those that are larger ... and I just don't find anything fun in that.

It is a shame, because the production values ARE so very high here. My first impression when running it was, quite literally, "Wow! This will be great!" ... and then the game turned out to be what I feared. If more than one level makes the difference in getting across something I am missing then I am happy to admit to being wrong about this. As it is, if that sort of gameplay floats your particular boat this is VERY well executed.

For me though, in the end, there is no entertainment value here ... at least beyond "Hey, can YOUR phone do THIS?"

Keep up the quality and production values EA - just PLEASE next time put a real GAME in there too!
