From skateboard legend to rock star and movie actor, Mike Vallely is known as a pioneer and innovator in the skateboarding world. Discovered by Stacy Peralta (Z-Boys) and Lance Mountain in the 80s, Mike became the first east coast street skater to emerge on the scene and became an overnight sensation. Subpar
After waiting months the game finally arrived and I found out I need the iPod touch software update so I bought it just so that I could play this game. It just is not that good. The controls are nearly impossible for me. I can not control the character or his board well. Maybe updates will improve it, but after the long wait for me this is a let down.
Has Potential But is Lacking
I had high hopes for this app and for the most part it appears to be well designed but it's leaving me wanting more. I thought that the board controls for tricks is intuitive (especially if you are a skater). But the controls for speed is janky at best.
Of all the different configurations for iPhone skate apps I feel that having the skater just move forward and having the option to brake works best. With this app you need to swipe (and keep swiping) your finger to keep moving. Which I though was cumbersome. And couple that with the fact that the motion to switch to fakie is induced unknowingly at times with a similar swipe is frustrating too. I want to know when I'm going fakie. Not just have it happen on accident.
Again, the motions for tricks like kickflips and heelflips are so close to the real thing that if you actually have enough speed you can pull it off. Otherwise, you're stuck below the lip on some of the obstacles. It's like being forced to skate flat ground at the bottom of a really sick pool.
Being an old school skater I love the old Powell boards and all the elements of the game that make it seem like it could be a game that you can't put down. But due to the cumbersome speed controls I'm not as psyched to pick it up and try again. Which is unfortunate for an app that is $5. Maybe I'm spoiled, but I just want to pick it up and shred. Especially on rainy days like today!
AWESOME!!!
I just got my Ipod Touch for Christmas, but have since purchased several of the skateboarding apps available. This is by far the best ever! Just after playing the first few minutes, it reminded me so much of the Tony Hawk games for the larger consoles. But this one is all Mike V. How could it get any better? Finally, a skateboad game worth purchasing and playing for the Iphone. Great job Ratrod!!! A+++++
