Best shopping cart app for me

This is the third shopping cart app that I have purchased for my iphone and the only one that delivers the features that I wanted. I have been using a treo for many years and was religious in keeping my shopping list with a free app called HandyShopper. It was simple and fast to search and add items to the list and it did a good job of attaching items to stores. Adding items quickly is the first thing that both SplashShopper and ShoppingList fail to do easily.

Here is how it works in HandyShopper for the Treo and iNeedStuff for the iphone: You simply start typing an item you want. The list dynamically is filtered as you type. If that item was already on the list you simply click button with the name of the item after only the first few letters. If the item has never been on your list before, you click the button to add the item. That's it. Very fast. The other two apps that I tried didn't combine the search and add functions. Neither had a search box at all. You needed to scroll through a long list. If the item wasn't there you had to locate the "add" button and start all over.

All 4 apps track stores but iNeedStuff is revolutionary in the ease of handling them:

HandyShopper on treo: you manually selected the name of the store(s) where you purchase the item. This is down a menu from the original adding an item, so it takes time to do this for a new item. When shopping at a particular store, you can select that store and only see items that you purchase there. I've been using this method for years and it's great.

SplashShopper for iphone: Here too you can link items to stores, but you can't select one store to shop and just display those items. The best you can do is show the store name in the list and sort by that. Even worse, if you select muliple stores for an item, it lists it as "multiple". Not so useful.

ShoppingList for the iphone: This app makes the entire store feature very complicated. It can use GPS like iNeedStuff to mark the stores, but you need to go to the store select page to make that work first before you start shopping. You might as well just choose the store name from the list instead of firing up the GPS. Then they add a whole "shopping session" that you need to start and end to presumably track what you purchased and your total bill. This is just too much work and information for me.

iNeedStuff: Incredible. You never have to manually link an item to a store! Wow! Let's say you have just purchased the app and then went through your house and started adding things to your shopping list. We know how easy that is to do with the search and add function. Then drive to a store, fire up the app, check off the first item you put in your basket. It will ask if you want to use GPS. It will ask for a store name. That's it. Now that item is remembered as being purchased here and all the rest of the items you buy there that day. When you return to that store, it will display the items you need and have purchased here before on top. Then in the next section the items you need but have never purchased here. I never have to create the links to stores and I never have to select the store that I am at manually.

On top of that, I was checking out the website and they have a discussion board with the developer actively answering questions and listing upcoming features. That's a good sign.

I know I have probably spent way too much time with something as seemingly trivial as a shopping list program. I hardly ever write reviews on apps, but I saw some rather negatives reviews on this one that I would like to see get more support. The people compaining about the price are really not interested in using a product like this.

Don't overlook this gem!

Nice! This app is really slick and I thought it was worth the $9.99. Anyone who says notepad can do the same thing doesn't know what they are talking about. After some initial confusion about how it worked, I quickly figured it out and found it to be a very convenient and streamlined way to make my shopping lists. The "Make List" screen contains a list of items you can choose from. It comes pre-loaded with somebody's long, generic shopping list, so the first thing I did was remove the stuff I don't ever buy and added things that I frequently buy. From that point on, it was ready to go. Just tap the + or - button to increase or decrease the quantities you want to buy of each item. You can also use the auto-complete field for finding an existing item if you feel like typing, but it was always easier to flick through the alphabetical list. It would be nice if this list included the "A-Z scroll bar" feature that Apple's own Contacts app displays.

When you're ready to shop, go to the "Shopping" screen and tap each item as you purchase them. The items drop to the bottom of the list under the "Purchased" heading. Rather than display a checkbox, the items are removed from the list. This lets you focus your attention on what is left--no need to scan through the list for unchecked boxes.

This application also uses the location awareness feature of the iPhone when you go shopping, so the first time you buy an item somewhere new, it will ask you to enter the name of the location. As you check-off the item in that location, it will remember that you bought it there, and sort your shopping list in future based on your location! Very cool. I ran into one glitch where the app showed that I had never purchased my items at the current location, but when I tapped the items on my list, it never asked me for the name of the location. I surmised afterwards that it must have thought I was at the Apple Store, which was about 0.75 miles away. I guess the location feature is not very precise. Now the app thinks I buy bread and bananas at the Apple Store, LOL. Hopefully a future version will fix that, or at least show me what location it thinks I am at, and let me choose a different one (or add a new one manually), BEFORE I start checking items off the list. Besides that, I would like a larger font size in the text entry boxes. I never saw the app crash or run slowly (unlike OmniFocus, but that is a different review), and it looks very professional. Well done!

All I need is in iNeedStuff

I have to admit since the App Store opened, I’ve become obsessed with finding a shopping list application that easily keeps me and my husband on the same page with our shopping.

The first program I found (free) allowed us to sync our lists over the Web. This was wonderful but the app didn’t have an easy sort or search function. Once the list reached 60 items it was difficult to find items to re-check them for purchase. My husband added “milk” twice because he couldn’t find it among the list items although it was there. Additionally, the list for purchase could not easily be ordered so that items would not be missed on the shopping trip.

The second program had a desktop client (at an additional charge over the $10 cost of the app) that allowed for computer input of a shopping list. Items could be sorted but not filtered. Aside from this, the interfaces were cumbersome and quirky at best. Most importantly, there was no way to synchronize my list with my husband’s.

iNeedStuff v. 1.3.0 is the ideal, elegant solution to my grocery list needs. The new update allows syncing of my list with my husband’s. It is so quick! My list of over 300 items was synced with the web bubble and then with my husband’s iPhone in less than 30 seconds each. Each subsequent sync usually takes less than a second, two at most. The learning part of this program is very powerful. This app allows you to define your own shopping order simply by checking off your items as you shop in the order in which you shop. iNS learns that the path you take as you move through your favorite stores. The more you shop the more accurate iNS is in ordering your shopping list. The string filtering is also invaluable in creating a shopping list. No more searching a long alphabetical list for an item simply type part of the name and the master list is filtered into a small list of items containing that segment (i.e. “Piz” will shorten your list to “Frozen Pizza”, “Pizza”, and “Pizza Dough” if they are on your list).

Among the more amazing features with iNeedStuff are the developer support and responsiveness. Built into the iNS App is a system to vote for additional functionality that you believe will make iNS the best list application in the App Store. You actually have a say in the direction the app will grow. I’ve posted to the iNS forum and received a response from a developer as have many others. Someone from PDAscent is in the forums several times a day checking on and responding to the posts from app users. The Sync functionality was implemented earlier than initially planned because of the huge request from the user base. It is to PDAscent’s credit that they are so receptive to input from their end-users and their needs.

I look forward to seeing this application improve and become even more polished. It’s a superb start! Keep up the good work.
