Not too bad...
This App got slammed (and rightfully so) for being $15 when it was released. At $5, it was easier to click the 'buy' button. The app is nice and useful for when you're walking around DC and don't have a metro map handy. Sure you could use the WMATA site from the iPhone, but I think this app could go back to charging $10 or $15 if it added the following...
1) Instead of just scheduled arrival and departure times at the next station, tell me what's there and how far away it is. Like when you click Federal Triangle, show the train schedule and ten below it just a blurb saying White House - XX mi. And make that linkable to Maps with an option for directions from the station. That would be WAY handy for tourists.
2) The alerts feature is very nice, but the app needs to have a Delays feature as well. I know AT&T gets no service in the metro, but at least if you are able to check while going into the metro you can get some sort of warning...
3) Include the MetroBus routes and transfer centers. A lot of the tourists I run across have spent tons of money on cab fare from BWI or IAD to get to the hotels inside the beltway without knowing that MetroBus services both of those airports.
4) I really like the ability to get "directions" and route plan within the app, but it'd be an absolute killer if they told you the estimated fare for the trip as well...
IF all that was included, I'd gladly pay $10 for the app, but as it is, $5 is pretty fair. You get a schedule and a very pretty map, the ability to link the station address in Maps and the ability to route plan (including estimated commute and # of transfers...) Decent app - I'd love to see it do more though...
PERFECT for the iPod Touch
First, the good: This app works amazingly well. The directions alone, without graphics would be great, but the graphics make this even better! (I love the animated push-pin drop!) As a frequent traveler, I come to cities where I have a rough idea of where i want to go, but don't have detailed info on how to get there. Direction form this app, "Take this train. Walk to that station. Get on the other train." is PERFECT.
The Bad: I could really use a bit more detailed info on the street map part of the graphics. This would help in finding "me" when I am not in a Wi-Fi hotspot. This is the only reason it didn’t get a 5-star rating. Still, I found it useful enough to buy NYC, DC, BART and PATH versions. Which brings me to... MORE CITIES! Please!
The Ugly: Well, simply put... the people who review apps before they USE them. Those who base their entire review on what they think (and from what I am reading it is a big assumption that they are, in fact, thinking) the app is supposed to do. Or worse, they base a review on how useful they think (oops… there I go again!) it MIGHT be for them. Come on folks, step out of your little box and see the world from the other guy's point-of-view. You might be surprised how much you don't know and how fun it is to learn something new.
