Atmospheric, Haunting, Fiendishly Smart

I had been waiting for this lovely game to make it to the Mac for some time and was not disappointed. This is a platforming experience on par with Braid and probably the best ten dollars I have spent in the app store.

I was a little concerned about performance on my 13" mbp but it ran like a charm, not a hint of slowdown throughout. My GeForce 320M had zero problems so if your GPU is at that level or above, you have nothing to worry about.

This game has a very sparse narrative. No text to read here. Playing the game is really the only way to get a glimpse of what it's about, but even then, there is little context to what exactly is going on. The entire experience has a very dreamlike quality. It communicates primarily by mood and does so exceptionally well - the graphical presentation is beautiful and genuinely creepy in places; it uses silence and ambient sounds to great effect; there is little music but none of it is intrusive. I had the distinct impression these fellows truly understood what makes games like Half-Life special and somehow managed to compress that down into a platformer experience.

The game is a series of physics platforming puzzles and there are new mechanics being introduced constantly to keep things from getting stale. Except for a late-game switch that's not very well indicated (I jumped to my death at least 30 times trying to grasp for a rope I shouldn't have) I found the challenge level almost perfect. My one complaint would be that the game doesn't teach enough - too often, you must die in order to understand how the puzzle functions. Of course, this does give the game a chance to show off those wonderful, grisly death animations, but sometimes it is frustrating to have something clobber you sight unseen.

My other complaint would be that it doesn't show you the chapters in which you've already collected the secret baubles nor remaining chapters where secrets not yet found are still hidden. I would imagine they probably have some effect on the ambiguous ending, so it would be nice if there were an easier way to figure out where you should be looking than having to read a walkthrough online.

While there will always be a place for shooters and all of the other well-established genres, occasionally a game comes along that moves the medium forward, even if only a little. It might be a stretch but I'd say this is such a game.

XBOX 360 Arcade Port

Firstly, I own this game for Xbox 360 as well, and have played it extensively. I have enjoyed it so much,in fact, I also purchased it here to play on my computer. I hope the developer(s) reads this comment because it is truly one of my favorite games, so thanks not only for making it in the first place, but also for bringing it to the App Store.

Note on performance, runs perfectly on the Early 2011 MacBook Pro's ( Lion ) if anyone had a question about that.

Breath-taking Graphics and Spectacular Sound Design

Get. This. Game.

If you like puzzle-games in side-scroller form…get this game. Play it at night with lights off and absolute silence with good over-the-ear or in ear headphones. You'll be totally submersed.
