New to Mafia Wars? Check these fast tips...
I started playing last night, and it took me a few levels to realize some *key* strategies. Read up, and you can save yourself some time and trouble!
1) Never *EVER* buy anything from the Godfather except skill points! No, not energy. No, not stamina. Not even mobsters. Energy and stamina will refill themselves over time, and if you're reading this review, then you've probably already added about a kabillion people to your mafia for free already (In fact, go ahead and add me too: 5403 7187 12 - thanks!) In case you're really new, 1 mobster that the Godfather sells you is exactly the same as adding 1 friend by entering in their code, only you're not spending 20 points to enter in the code.
2) Watch your experience bar. Fill it first with fights, then top yourself off by doing jobs. The best way to make the most of your energy is to do jobs up until you're *nearly* ready to level, then do the biggest job you can with the points that are left to take you over the top. ie: get to 119/120, then do a 15 exp job with the 15 energy you cleverly saved up. This way, you'll roll over 14 points into your new level. Every time you level up, all of your energy, health, and stamina top off totally full. Try to spend every last energy point in that last job that levels you, because you effectively lose it anyway. Might as well use it to send you farther into your new level, right? :)
3) Fighting... Depending on your goals, either focus on opponents with the most money, or the ones you're sure you can beat. Optimally, try for both at once. You can only win a max of $120K on any one fight, so a billionaire will net you as much as a millionaire. Having a huge mafia won't guarantee wins, but it sure does help. I'm consistently beating level 30 characters who have a mafia size of 4, with my level 16 character who's got 140 mafia. You will earn 1 exp for a loss, and 2 exp for a win. If you win, you're earning 2x as many exp as the base energy/job ratio. Even if you lose, you're even with the 1 energy = 1 exp ratio for the basic Jobs.
4) When you allocate skill points, don't even bother with the Secret Skills or Health at all. You can buy gear that easily trumps the Secret Skills, and you can buy health from the doctor any time you get too low to fight. (even if you get to zero health, you never die, so don't worry about that - all hail the mysteries of modern medicine!) ;) Spend all your skill points on Energy and Stamina. Each Stamina point represents 1 fight, and the Energy points are used for doing Jobs. **Note: When you're spending your skill points, it looks like each Energy point costs 2 skill points, but that "2 points" is actually referring to Stamina, just below.**
5) Health... each fight will cost you some health points, whether you win or lose. When you get below 20 health points, you will be unable to fight until you get 20 or more. You regenerate over time, but the better option is to visit the Doctor, and have him heal you up. There's a trick, though. He (she?) charges a percentage of your money, not a flat rate. If you've got a ton of cash, it'll cost you a bunch to get back to full health. However, if you're nearly broke, that same amount of healing is dirt cheap! (See where I'm going with this?) Any time you need to heal up to get back into the fight, spend yourself broke, THEN go talk to the good doctor. Either buy up properties (if you've got a lot of money) or weapons/armor (if you're not so rich). One thing to keep in mind is that many of the items you can buy have an upkeep cost, so if you're spending your money before you go heal, you might want to only buy items with no upkeep costs.
