An overall disappointment
I downloaded this application for a recent trip to China, and while it seems good in the screenshots, it's far too limited to be of much use in the realworld. Although there are many categories and subcategorizes, what I didn't realize is that you ultimiately have to drill down to one narrow topic and then can only create half a dozen different phrases. The end result is far to limited to be of much use.
Let me give you some examples. While there is an entire section on Airport, nowhere in that section is the actual Mandarin word for Airport. So when I got into a taxi and wanted to go to the airport, I had no way of actually saying it. The closest I got was to say "International Terminal". The night before, I wanted to ask the hotel desk (which did not speak any english), "how long will it take to get to the airport". No luck, not even close, even though you could probablly find all the required characters somewhere in the database, you just can't access those words to make a sentence.
Time after time, I ran into this problem, the sentences that you can create are only a few and invariblly are not what you are trying to communicate. The rest of the time, it took so long to try to hunt down my thought that I just ran out of time finding it.
Great idea, looks good, but just doesn't work in real life.
Seriously disappointing
This app barely has anything that would justify the $4.99 price. I have studied one semester of mandarin in college and the content of this app is barely enough fill one class session! I originally paid $9.99 for mine and notice that the price has been lowered to 4.99 which is still way too expensive for such a mediocre app.
A Necessity
With my wife over 1,000 miles away, and my 72 year old chinese mother-in-law living with me, this has been the best tool ever. I have recently became ill, and I am able to communicate more than just hand gestures.
Is the tool perfect, no. Does it do its job, and do it well - YES. I do not think there will be a perfect translation product. For me it is worth every penny I paid for it and more.
Also of note - if you can not hear the translation from your iphone speaker - turn off the vibrate switch. THis is true in the demo as well as the true version.
Tech support is more than awesome. Before I even bought the product, I e-mailed the company/developer about questions I had and he responded within minutes.
There is also a new version coming out soon. The current version works perfectly with my iPhone 4 with iOS 4.1.
