Customer Reviews
Second Choice of Two Spreadsheet Apps
I bought this app and "Spreadsheet" in March 2009. Of the two I plan to use "Spreadsheet."
Let me say that I am qualified to comment. I am a technical professional (Ph.D.) and have worked for a major PC company for 25 years. I am comfortable with Microsoft Windows and Mac OS and have used Excel for years on an HP iPaq. I have been waiting to replace that capability on my iPhone.
This app has a couple of strengths but the weaknesses will prevent me from using it. The strengths are: 1) it handles .xls files directly, 2) it handles files with multiple sheets, 3) file transfer is easy using a browser on a network.
The weaknesses are 1) format changes are lost when you close and re-open the file (another reviewer pointed this out), 2) I encountered spreadsheet errors and file name errors while using it for a short period of time after I bought it, and 3) I found the user interface to be considerably less intuitive and effective than "Spreadsheet."
Even if the bugs are fixed, I believe I will be more productive using "Spreadsheet," and cannot recommend this app.
Promising, but not ready for mission critical use.
Was really looking forward to this app functioning well. I use Excel sheets all day long in a verticle environment. Though I love my iPhone, I'm still using a Windows Mobile device for spreadsheets due to the lack of a working iPhone alternative.
Though this app looks very promising, so far it is not formating dates in existing sheets properly. The Excel date "2/20/2009" will appear as "39864". Though formating can be changed in the app, changes are not saved when exiting the sheet. When the sheet is saved back to the computer existing date format is lost also.
Once opened, exiting sheets with frozen panes do not initially display correctly when closed and reopened.
Again, it appears with a few minor improvement, this will be a fine app, but this date and format issue is a show stopper for now.
Missing critical features, UI issues, Unexpected quitting
Decent first effort, however, I expected more after waiting for so many months (and paying $9.99).
The lack of support for basic functions like Filtering and the inability to email files after modification reduces its usefulness to me considerably. Additionally, when attempting to highlight a section of a column that extends above or beyond the screen, the app does not sense my finger movement and scroll up or down, and thus far I have not figured out how to select a larger-than-screen-size portion of a cells, e.g. for copying-and-pasting. Some form of a contextual menu would be great, too, e.g. to appear after double-clicking on a highlighted selection for functions such as Fill Series, etc.
Finally, the app has repeatedly unexpectedly quit on me while in use and the behavior did not change after doing a hard reboot of my iPhone and confirming that I had nearly 40 MB of free memory.
I look forward to relatively immediate updates to improve stability and add these basic features.
