Customer Reviews
My Review (so far)
Well I'm only part-way through the game but I thought I'd take a break and share my thoughts.
First of all, the game is incredibly professional. The cutscenes are absolutely amazing and the story so far reads like your traditional Bioware epic (a good thing). The music is also very good, featuring both songs from me1 and new music as well. There's also some very good voice-acting, though it's only for the cutscenes and a few lines here and there. The whole game looks great, from the dialogue screen to the characters to the effects during combat. The combat itself manages to be fast-paced, strategic, and satisfying.
That's not to say it's perfect. The framerate drops dramatically when more than two enemies are shooting at you, and the accelerometer controls feel clunky and unresponsive at times, particularly at the start of each fight and during the afformentioned framerate drops. The two problems are illustrated best during the first boss fight, which would probably be impossible if it weren't for the fact that Jacob shoots on his own. The game is also very big, and took a pretty long time to download. I made sure to restart my phone before playing.
Overall though, the game is a great deal at only 5 bucks(!), and feels like it could last awhile.
The included high-quality trailer for me2 is nice too.
Tough To Recommend
Not at all like Mass Effect proper, tho you'd be a fool to expect that in the first place. Little skill or strategy is involved at all. A cursor auto-targets all enemies, and you walk your character around the environment from a top-down perspective with the accelerometer. Dead zone is way too big. The dialogue system is inconsequential, as well. I would only recommend this to die-hard Mass Effect fans. The license is the only appealing part of the game, and it means nothing to newcomers.
Great story, but...
They just should have skipped the action sequences. Just because the iPhone has an accelorometer, does not mean you should use it for games like this.
I love the Mass Effect story so much, that i'm forcing myself through. A tap to move, or even turn based would have made this my favorite game. I feel like i'm playing the old fashioned game where you move the ball around a maze, trying to avoid the holes (like Labyrinth). Pitiful.
