Description
See a great pair of shoes in a magazine and want to find the nearest location to buy them? See a cool new HDTV in the store and want more details before buying it? See a movie ad or poster and want to view the trailer? If these ads & shelf tags contain a 2D barcode, you can use the NeoReader to transform your mobile phone into a barcode scanner and immediately link to the web content you are looking for. You can even promote yourself with a 2D code. Create your own personal code that links to your website and you can show it off on a business card, a t-shirt, heck, you can tattoo it on your arm.
Install the NeoReader barcode scanning software and you're one easy click away from information you want - everywhere you go. It's so easy to use - launch the NeoReader, click on the barcode with your camera and ZIP...the content is delivered to your phone. No typing URLs into your browser, no painful search engines, no cumbersome menus to navigate.
The NeoReader is a universal barcode scanning application that allows you to access mobile web content by scanning codes from print ads, packaging, billboards and broadcast media. Universal means that the NeoReader scans all the standard 2D symbologies (Data Matrix, QR, Aztec), so NeoReader is the only scanning software you’ll need.
NOTE: Product barcodes (UPC, EAN, JAN) can not be read with the standard iPhone camera. To read product barcodes you need a macro lens like the one built into "Clarifi" - a protective case for the iPhone by Griffin Technology.
Many companies are starting to utilize 2D codes... install the NeoReader and start taking advantage of them today.
What's New in Version 2.00
NeoReader is now able to decode your barcodes directly from the viewfinder screen. There is no need anymore to tap any button.
Additionally the advertisements were removed and some enhancements were added.
Customer Reviews
Works, but spies on what you see
Whenever the app opens up the web browser to access a URL, it seems to send your query through some private redirector at qode.com, which then bounces you to the target website. The app also has a place where you can fill in your state, gender, and age if you are feeling generous enough that day to fork over your demographic information. I suppose gathering this info is the revenue model for the app. Explore other free barcode readers before settling on this nosy one.
Nice!
I like the application design. It feels right. Too bad the iPhone SDK does not allow you to access the camera directly. The flow of the scan would not be so klunky. Aside from the SDK limitation (which can't be avoided), it works well, does what it supposed to, and really snappy after you get through the scan. This 2D barcode stuff is really cool!
Needs More Documentation
I'm not sure where people's complaints are coming from. Yes, the software takes you to a URL address or Wikipedia search. But it also has a popup message telling you what the code says and stores this on a history page so you can go back and see it later. I'm not sure what else you would like the software to do beyond telling you what the code means, recording it for you, AND redirecting you with an Internet search. It's not like you could copy and paste anything.
To those people unaware of why the program is redirecting you from one website to another, it's accessing a database for whatever code type you scanned to see if there is a match. Try scanning both a UPC code and a DataMatrix code, you'll see that it takes you through two different websites.
Like I said in the title, this program could use more documentation. It doesn't give you any explanation as to how to start, and if there is no match, it doesn't tell you in any way. But it does exactly what it is supposed to when it does work, and it looks good while doing it. And any problems with documentation or something like an overlay to line up the code in could come in future versions. Plus, it's free.
