REAL NICE FLEXIBLE APP - Really useful and easy
Yeah this is a pretty flexible note taker. Did my first three "projects" on it today and found it easy to use with decent features. This will definitely be one of three or four apps I use for planning projects and keeping ToDo lists.
All kinds of ways to do things: import camera roll, snap a pic, do a drawing, handwriting, go to the web and copy things into your note.
With the free-floating text boxes, you can make a "note" into a page (or pages) of "sticky notes" that you can edit, resize, reposition, overlap, change background color/pattern, modify font size/color/bold/italic/underline.
THIS IS GOOD! And I'm sure future releases will be even better.
THIS ONE IS A KEEPER at least for my needs.
Retina Update Furthers the Awesomeness of This App
The retina update is absolutely wonderful! My class notes look much clearer than before and the updated icons are nice too. If you are on the fence for a note taking app, get this one and ditch Penultimate (Penulti-failure).
This application can handle handwriting, typing, text boxes, PDF annotation, PDF import and export, Dropbox support, email support, etc.
This app makes handling documents on an iPad a breeze. It's easier to use than ever!
the best of the lot
I haven't updated my review of Notability in a while. With every update, notability becomes a better and better version of itself, which while a seemingly obvious statement in general, doesn't hold true for many apps out there.
And to stay below the prices of competing apps is just incredible.
Along with Soundnote for its 25mb per hour recording capability and Awesome note for its simplified syncing wih the iphone, Notability is the only other note taking/note making app I recommend on a regular basis. While its true that Pages, Quickoffice, and Polaris also have their uses for overall office suite capabilities and are must haves for me, Notability is the app I reach for time and time again.
Here's just one example of why Notability beats the competition. Most note taking apps make an inserted photo permanent once you place the photo. Notability allows you to edit the photo after it's been placed, in case you change your mind about placement or size or wrapping features. Another example, the eraser doesn't require you to erase every pixel, each line you draw is treated as a single object, simply guide the eraser of a part of the line, and the whole line disappears. Takes getting used to but is ultimately more powerful. And the latest retina display update is stunning.
What I like most is that it's simply...well...simple. Yet full featured, and absolutely gorgeous when writing. Few other apps have that perfect blend of features, usability, and overall beauty, all in a package that costs less than competitors.
If you're low on cash, and want an all-rounder note taker/note maker at a killer price, a note app that you will enjoy using time and time again, look no further, Notability is where it's at.

I've spent quite a bit of money in note-taking apps in search of finding one that is ideal.
Of course, if an app were to reach perfection, it would outshine all others so convincingly that there would be no competition, and that perfection hasn't been reached yet. that's a good thing, as it leaves more and more work to be done, and let's be honest, there are so many note taking apps because there are so many approaches to note-taking and so many different focal points that users like to focus on.
Given that, finding the right one for me isn't necessarily about the very best app out there, but finding the best app for me. Since there are different scenarios that require different styles of note-taking, I've narrowed it down to really 5 note-taking apps, and each has their specialty. But hands down, the general all purpose note-taking app prize has to go to Notability.
There are several reasons for this.
- First, the ability to have basic layout options is a big plus
- Second, the annoyance of having to flip pages is not there.
- Third, the outlining feature is so effective, it could be an app in and of itself
- Fourth, the filing system allows folders and movement of files from folder to folder
- Fifth, the layout of the menu and extended line keyboard contains the buttons I want immediate access to.
- Sixth, in a pinch, there is a recording feature
- Seventh, there is an undo feature
- Eight, the object elements are editable
For note-taking that doesn't require really fast drawing, or handwriting, or really long texts, or more unique object types, or very long audio recording sessions, or more complex file management, Notability is the perfect app with all the key features I want to make it the app I turn to first. For the other features, I don't need handwriting, and I have a separate app for fast drawing + long audio recording, an app for long text writing, an app for text file management and sorting, an app for inserting unique objects, and strangely enough, an app for viewing and editing simple word documents.
But at the end of the day, Notability is the true standout as my goto app for any short to medium note-taking work. Just an amazing app that surprises me pleasantly at every turn and is a joy to use.
