Warning! Old school RPG in all it's brutal glory
Ok, a lot of younger gamers (and some of my fellow old-timers who have forgotten their roots) will not enjoy this at all. You kids are so spoiled these days on self-adjusting AI, and save-anywhere gameplay, and getting checkpoints every five feet, that Phantasy Star II will be a slap in your face. It will not hold your hand. There are no checkpoints in the overworld. The enemies are MEAN. If you die 3 hours into a dungeon after gaining 5 levels and lots of loot, sorry, it's back to the Data Memory station (PS II's save points), minus those 3 hours from your odometer. It is a hardcore, level-grinding, 60+ hour ordeal in the grand old tradition of games that were an actual CHALLENGE. If your idea of "hardcore" is beating Halo on Legendary, this isn't the game for you. But, if you're a proud member of gaming's Old Guard who wants to re-live some agonizingly wonderful memories, or a newcomer who wants to explore modern gaming's bloody background, then dive right in.
See you around the Algo System.
A phantasy comes true!
The phantasy star series is about as old and awesome as the Final Fantasy series and Dragon Quest series. Sega put alot of love into their original quadilogy. Graphics are quite good, thought nothing awesome, it sure brings out the environment and setting well. Battle's are also very engaging and challenging. Believe it or not this game has some pretty big twist in the story. One of which is similar to Final Fantasy 7 famious twist to the story but PS2 had it first. PS2 is a late 80's, early 90's RPG and there for is a good amount of grinding in the game. The dungeons however are pretty good and if you play it right exploring and grinding can go hand in hand. Overall, awesome game! Sega bring the rest out!
This is THE rpg
This was the game that got me into RPG's. Yeah it's hard; hell, when the game came out it was pre-packaged with the guide...Sega knew you'd need it. But overall, it's up there with only a few others in the top RPG's of all time. Great mechanics, great characters, great story...and a plot twist halfway through that was the first "gutpunch" I'd ever had in a video game (not to be repeated untill FF7). My only (small) complaint is that you really don't know what the spells do by their names. Quickly remidied by checking online of course. If you love RPG's and want to see where all the one's you play now learned how to do it, Phantasy Star 2 is where to go.
